HI all,

Just starting out with my first road bike after moving from a hybrid and I have a question about shorts. At the minute during the cold evenings I have been using my decathlon padded tights with just standard boxers under them and if I have padded shorts on I do the same. The problem with standard boxers is they are not good to be honest so I have been looking at some cycling boxers / base layer shorts but they seem to be all padded as well which I guest is not practical to have two lots of padded items on.

What does everyone else do or can you recommend any under shorts that wont cost the earth

With padded tights and shorts you go commando.
They are designed to be worn against the skin, not other fabrics.

Padded shorts and tights are designed to be worn commando . You can get padded underwear then wear non padded shorts over the top .two lots of padded would be a bad idea. If it's really cold I do wear a non padded base layer under my tights but it does not feel right so it has to be properly chilly for this combo

In colder weather I have my normal bib shorts on then my Altura Wint Cruisers on top (non-padded). Ive found this a great combo and no issues as the bib shorts are worn as they should be - sans underwear!

I quite often wear unpadded roubaix longs under cycling bibs in the winter. No issues for me this way. I find wearing the tights over the top they slip around because the Lycra of the shorts is too slippy. I also wear padded winter longs especially when it's really cold. Basically you don't want anything sliding around rubbing against your sensitive skin.

I might try those base layer shorts myself as the effect of the cold weather on the old chap can lead to a bit of chaffing if the stitching is a bit rough!

I wear unpadded undies under unpadded thermals under unpadded trousers... but I ride either padded or hammock saddles, unlike most people on here as far as I can tell.

If you wear normal boxers or pants under cycling shorts or longs the seam will possibly cause problems as it will be be between you and saddle. Cycling gear should have the seams to the side of your saddle.
