Mancunian in self imposed exile in leafy Cheshire
Our alleged local gangster has been cleared of three murder charges and has had his house seized by the NCA as the high Court ruled it was bought with the proceeds of drug dealing . I believe one of the murder charges was in relation to the drug dealer who was shot @fossyant mentioned earlier. Another was a guy who was made to drink petrol and burned in the boot of his car, there was some issue with the evidence. The third was ruled self defence as he shot the chap in the head but it was during a struggle upstairs at the gangsters house and the weapon may have been the victims or something like that. Apparently the police have a vendetta against him. Makes quite exiting reading in the local rag although I am not sure I would seek his help if I had a problem although he is involved in a large local security Co that looks after lots of local houses and buildings in the South Manchester and Cheshire area.

Sometime around the year 2000 myself and a colleague were sent late one night to a mass brawl in the street on a housing estate in town. It's one of those estates where the kids run rampant, being a nuisance at best and criminal at worst.

Anyway, we arrived and as we turned into the street there were half a dozen Grant Mitchell types and a dozen or so teenagers laying on the floor with different levels of bloody injury. Baseball bats and bits of old went flying out of sight over hedges.

"Everything alright?", we enquired. "Yes officer, just taking the night air" said one of the Grant Mitchell clones. I looked at the wounded teenagers on the floor and asked "and what's going on here then?". Several wounded youngsters mumbled "nothing officer, we're just playing."

We sent the kids on their way and bade the leather jacket wearers good night. We later heard on the grapevine that one old lady had her car damaged, and unfortunately for the local hoodies this old ladies son was a big man in London and sent a few of his crew to have a chat with them through the medium of a broken limb. Things remained fairly Q after that.

I suspect our 'local gangsters' of the 70s were no more than the hardest family on the street or village or town, often up to no good, possibly did some dealing and generally were healthily respected simply because they were harder and there were more of them.
Nowadays, the above illustrates how things have changed. It's a whole different ball game.
