Does CycleChat have too many non-cycling related threads?

I have the feeling that CC is moving in the wrong direction. I would like to see all non-cycling sections removed EXCEPT for the cafe.

I think that would make CC a very dull place.
Many came here from the old C+ because we enjoyed the banter between each other and many of those are still regulars of P&L, Shaun has allowed us to have a space where we can carry on. There's a shedload of cycling threads here, P&L is only a small part, keep out if you don't like it. Many do.
Commuting which is primarily cycling based is pretty rancourous at times also.

But there are good people here with a lot of useful life insight, experience, and knowledge to share outside of bicycles which adds to the usefulness of this place and improves the community feel. Often I feel that's more valuable than bike - fu.

The beauty of cycling is that it's a broad-church in terms of it's membership and that's what makes it interesting socially.

those were the 'good old days' of Bonj, Arbitrary, Linford, etc who may have had strong opinions but it was all entertaining and fun and no-one took each other or the banter seriously.

It's never been the same since the characters left. Now we get people asking each other what they are wearing and what they have for breakfast or lunch. ffs.

In terms of forums, there's only Cafe and Current Buns and Debutantes, which are not cycle related. I think one thing the Crank Arms experiment showed us was that we could happily lose CAD and not mourn it's going.

General cycling is a huge failure in my mind. It dilutes a number of other forums and just acts as a dump for people who want to raise anything to do with cycling and haven't really thought were to put it. It's also immensely argumentitive without the saving grace of Cafe's irreverence. At a stroke the forum would be a better place if it was beginners again.

And....

I agree with FF on this, to have a forum where only cycling is talked about would be very boring. The arrangement on here is heaviy loaded for cycling and cycling related subjects, which as far as I'm concerned is good, but having two sections that are general subjects makes the whole forum more enjoyable. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, Keith, no matter how many times you ask, we are NOT having a Punctuation Mark Appreciation Section.

I would like to see all threads about Cycle Chat removed.

Or at least put in the Feedback section where they should be.

Seriously though, I agree with FF. This is a place for cyclists. And cyclists, despite (or because of) being a slightly bizarre demographic (to paraphrase Zoiders), have all kinds of interests in common besides cycling itself. And on the whole this place is miles more congenial than many other forums, cycling or otherwise, which I have have been involved in. It's not Singletrack for a start...

I really wonder what's prompted the recent spate of threads along these lines. As far as I can see the forum is working well, there is a great new redesign about to be launched, and most people seem to be happy.

And some people are just never happy whatever...

@tundragumski - I'm actually looking to add more cycling sections as part of the software move - we have more members now than a couple of years ago, so there's scope for expanding into more specialist areas.

However I have noticed a bit of a creep in arguments and negative posts in some areas of the forums in recent months, which is something I plan to address as we move forward.

Right now my focus is on getting us over to the new software, but once that's done I'll start addressing those areas I feel need some work.

@Crackle - I think you have a reasonable point about General Cycling, so will review that too. If you have any specific suggestions as to what possible categories it could be broken down into, then please feel free to PM me or post here.

Cheers,
Shaun
