Expensive bikes

I always thought something which is expensive is not value for money, nothing to do with how much money you make or what you can afford. eg Paying £1 for a pie is good.. £100 for the same pie is expensive.

I think a fiver for a magazine is extortionate but i will happily spend £1000's on new bikes (or accessories) i don't really need. Want is a powerful thing............
Really really want and a credit card are a terrible combination!!!

Not just you - it is one ugly boring looking bike. I can't stand that deep rim look either.

Agreed, leaves me utterly cold (as do pretty much all Specialized bikes) , dull, black and weird shaped

For me, I coulld spend £5k+ on a bike if I wanted but I could never justify it to myself - my Pearson is as good a bike as I will ever need, and probably better in reality, but it's so light and pretty (but I still don't ride it that much )

I just picked up a 2011 Whyte Cambridge for £450, ridden once - it's a great bike for £450 but I don't think I could justify paying the RRP for a 2013 one (£850), even though I would have no issues affording it

There is no definitive yardstick. I have a mortgage, a car, two small children and a wife in university, so my £240 road bike is something of an expensive luxury! In 10 years when my kids are older, my mortgage is smaller and my wife is qualified it'll be a different story.

A cheap bike is one where the crank taper has a limited design life. Anything else is fair game.

If you buy something do you describe it as expensive?

Probably not, as we'll justify the purchase in some way.

I'd probably initially say a £5k bike was expensive, but then afterwards I would never describe it as that.

Trying to remember my economics days and seem to remember it's all tied up with utility theory.
