You're right matey, not much can be done. If you're an insurgent intent on killing yourself and taking as many people as possible with you you're effectively unstoppable, unless your intentions are known about in advance.

"Excuse me Sir, may I search you please?" Bang.

Which is one reason why bag searches must occur at a distance from the largest crowds - not in a packed foyer.

There's isn't much that can stop them but security is vital. We have no perception of the level and volume of threats that the security services stop each day. If we did we most likely would not carry on and they would win.

So security is playing a part in stopping them from winning
Very true. If intelligence provides the authorities with several credible threats, on a given day and the decision is made by the authorities to concentrate their finite / limited resources on the most credible ( according to their selection criteria / assessment), and that turns out to not be the correct shout, any one of the other threats, can carry out their 'mission' with an increased chance of success, because the resources are surveilling the wrong threat. I'd imagine it's like trying to grab at mist.

This isn't true.

It's a common sentiment, but like most issues it is about reducing the incidence and impact of events, and mimising recovery. This is what Security does for us, and it beats many attacks.

There is no 100% protection from anything, true, but that doesn't mean Security can't defeat them - we can work to a minimise attacks.

I'm sure lot's are prevented..
But the bomb is not the weapon of choice now is it..

Cars and a lorry work well and very hard to stop unless you kill the driver

Indeed - but there are countermeasures here that can also provide security.

We agree that you cannot prevent all attacks, much like you cannot prevent all murder, but I want the message to be clear that security is important and effective, nevertheless.

Similar happens in many airports like Istanbul and Domodedova where everybody wnd their bags are screened before they can enter the terminal. However at busy times this just creates a mass of people equaly suitable as a target.
Wherever people regularly gather for whatever reasons there will sadly be opportunities.

If it gets to the stage of a murderer with a belt in a crowded environment it is too late. These things are stopped well in advance of putting the belt on.

My understanding is that many, many more have been stopped than have occurred. Majority of resources should continue with the emphasis on intelligence. Also, my understanding is the large amount of intelligence is gained through family and community. Alienating those that are our biggest allies in stopping this is counter-productive.

Alienation is a big reason why people slip into crime/terrorism - and I'm not talking through general prejudice affecting communities, but specific rejection of individuals from communities and families.

Full version of Tony "Longfella" Walsh's "This Is The Place", which he recited at yesterday's vigil:

This Is The Place

Though written several years ago, it's as good a response as any to this week's ignorant, murdering savages.

I apologise but I am very angry about this attack targeting as it did small children. I am just suggesting ways further attacks might be prevented. Something has to be done.
You are not alone, but there is only so much the security services can do to stop such atrocious acts and I expect they rely on, to some degree, support and information from communities that would otherwise feel alienated and less supportive if we treat their peaceful and law abiding members with suspicion and doubt.

Passions are running high and I think everyone is in agreement that this was a terrible tragedy, perpetrated by cowardly people, but please let's not argue and fight with each other.

Thanks,
Shaun

This morning our thoughts should be with the relatives of the victims. If I lost a child it would be difficult enough but to lose someone in such horrifying circumstances must be too much to bear.

My sentiments also , I was watching the other thread concerning this MEN bomb disaster, I have put it on the ignore list , there is so much hurt and despair out there at the moment ,
No one has any answers to the questions,

Question: News reports state 22 killed and 64 injured in the attack; typically does that number include or exclude the loser who carried out the attack?

I realise everyone is horrified by what has happened, but can I ask you to use the Café thread for sympathy and support and the Politics and Current Affairs thread for broader discussion related to the attack - in particular, the political, security and ideological aspects: https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/manchester-arena-explosion.218737/ [Opt in]

And please be thoughtful and considerate towards each other when replying; it’s a sad time - a bit of sensitivity would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Shaun

NB: I don't have time just now, but will probably move a few posts later to the other thread so the discussion of the points raised can continue.
