That Armstrong ^ made public statements expressing opposition to valve caps. That means he's a bad 'un in my books.

The valve hole is shaped for tubeless valve and walls/tyre bead is deeper than clinchers
No, you do need to put tape on, the above poster only said it is not installed when you bought them.
