Football World Cup - Russia 2018

Russia did well to arrange their opening fixture against the worst side in the competition and at least make themselves look good for a short while.

I can't see either them or Uruguay troubling the latter stages.

Unless Iran pull off a miracle, the opponents that await Russia and Uruguay will be Spain and Portugal. Says it all, really.

An embarrassing miss by Cavani. That almost went for a throw instead of a goal kick.

Not sure who I want to lose more - Russia for being an oppressive regime of drugs cheats or Uruguay for just being cheats (and for their antics in 86).

Still 1-1 in the game between Egypt & Saudi.

This game is starting to peter out somewhat. The heat and only having 10 men is starting to tell on Russia. Uruguay just looking like they'll settle for the 2-0. The whole match has been characterised by the overall lack of quality.

Yeah, but as per my previous post, assuming France win their group and Germany come second in theirs, which seems likely, the winners of Group G will probably have to beat both to get to the final (and that's assuming Germany see off Brazil in the next round).

Finishing as runners-up gives a notionally easier route to the final.
I said as much on here saturday night (sort of) - post #1342

Absolutely meaningless of course. But, it could pan out thus, if England come second in their group they may avoid going out to the krauts or the 'waxjobs' in the quarter final. Dare I say it, we could be looking at a semifinal bow out this time around.

I really ought to sleep I have a sprint tri in the morning.

Just saying.
As it stands this thread is 95% state what just happened on the pitch, which we're all well aware of. This is clouding any interesting commentary on the games as we're having to wade through "he just kicked the ball" posts.
And this is exactly what happens when we're watching cycling racing on TV. Someone's made a break - ooh, he's just had a crash - if he stays in the lead he'll win - he looks knackered now etc. etc.

And I have no problem with that. You seem to have little genuine interest in football, as your comments indicate. But feel free to troll.

Oooh, what a save by Akinfeev. That was a wicked strike. Probably the best save the Russian keeper's made all game.

Corner goes in. 3-0.

Cavani.

Given the number of chances Cavani has squandered in this game, it's about time he got one.
