Hi all,

Received my new Giant Deft 4 2015 all they way from Bournemouth Cycles yesterday and not had chance to go out on it yet but after finishing setting up the bike this evening I noticed that the rear wheel/tyre seems to be more to the left near the chain stays when facing from the rear of the bike. Is this common on the defy range or is there an issue.

I have tried to reset the wheel a few times but it always seems to sit to the left chain stay but when you look down the bike the wheel/tyre seems central to the frame.

Many Thanks
Chris

Looks even to me..if it spins true it will be fine.

Interesting and I wish I had an answer, as I'm sure you do. It seems to be dished correctly because it sits central to the brake blocks but for sure it appears nearer to one chainstay than the other. Don't suppose you've got a dishing tool to check the wheel?

Its my first road bike and i know the very basic stuff so i dont have a dish tool sorry.

Would be nice to see or hear from other Defy owners to see if theres is the same.

The wheel was already mounted on them frame when I received it from the bike shop in the box and I noticed that tonight but I could only get it to go back on the same position off centre more near the left chain stay when I face the bike from the rear.

Could it be that the right chain stay go,s out further due to the cassette being on the right than it does the left.

You could try turning the wheel round in the dropouts (so the cassette is on the left), if the wheel is off to the other side then the wheel dishing or hub is out. Otherwise it's not seated right in the dropouts, or the frame is out? The shop should sort it out though.

I will check this in the morning. The bike shop is not local to me as none had the defy 4 from 2015.

Swap it around in the dropouts as mentioned above and see if swings to the other side. For your info I bought a road bike and it took me ages to suss out mine was like yours albeit maybe not quite so far over, however I could never ever get the gear change bang on, never, eventually worked out what was wrong and tried to alter it myself thinking it was just out of true. Nope the dish must have been out, anyway long story short , cracked the rim on it and end up buying a replacement wheelset. New wheelset sits bang in the middle !

Morning all,

I have changed the wheel around this morning and it does seem to have moved over a little and the gap between the stays is a bit better but to me the tyre now looks off center.

I also noticed that when the bike was upside down and I held one side of the quick release in the dropouts if I was to press the other side of the quick release there is movement as if its not sat in both drops correctly and rocks up and down. Should there be any sort of play on the dropouts.

Sounds like you just need to slacken the QR, sit the wheel in the dropouts properly and then re-tighten the QR again. If the QR is properly tight, then there should be no movement. The fact that there is movement suggests that something is too loose.

When you sit the wheel in the drop outs do both sides just need to sit at the top of the drop outs resting on the frame or can I move it around to centre the wheel?

Well I have spoke to Giant Sheffield today and they have seen the images and said this is normal for the defy 4 as it uses an asymmetrical chainstay . He is going to forward my email onto Giant UK to confirm but has anyone else heard of this on the Defy range?

Just checked my Defy 0 (2015) and I can't say that has an asymmetrical chain stay - they both look equal to me and the wheel sits centrally.
