Okay then...the pedals are plastic and I'd like to replace with alloy ones...is it a universal fit?
Not clip in etc, just ordinary flat pedals...

Pretty much yes. Just get 9/16ths thread. Don't forget that one side is a left handed thread. I have fitted dozens and still cannot remember which!

Yes they are. Left pedal is reverse threaded. Simple way to remember is that you tighten the pedals by turning towards the front wheel and loosen them by turning towards the back wheel

A good way to remember this is with the crank arm pointing forwards use the spanner to push down against the direction of rotation of the crank.
Also I would bin any plastic pedals or give them to a workmate who occasionally commutes on a BSO

Do you think it matters which inner tube you use?
I have conti inners with conti tyres...just because they were on offer.
As to the OP first - ride on road at night must have lights simple. Reflector - pedal reflectors very vague but as to a red rear one I can't see the big deal in using a small reflector, they only weigh a few grams and anyhow why not ? Is it SO important to prove a point and maybe spend ten minutes - half an hour or so arguing with a police officer [or anyone else for that matter]?
Inner tubes sorry but it's vital not to use a front tube in a rear wheel [you'll end up going backwards], obviously.

The law states that every new cycle MUST be fitted with reflectors what happens after that is very vague. I personally would not ride at night without at least 2 front & 2 rear lights but heres a thing apparently it is illegal to have flashing lights "permanently" fixed to a cycle

I have lights on the Saracen but have only used them once, when walking through a dark tunnel in daylight.
I was thinking of NOT putting lights on the new bike as a permanent fixture, but keeping a working set in my rucksack incase I get caught out.
I'm not worried about weight, I'm not that type of rider, it just looks cleaner (and less to snag on a tree ) and the current front light keeps loosening if I've been bumping about off road
