The law states that every new cycle MUST be fitted with reflectors what happens after that is very vague. I personally would not ride at night without at least 2 front & 2 rear lights but heres a thing apparently it is illegal to have flashing lights "permanently" fixed to a cycle
Really? If that's correct it's gonna affect a good majority of cyclists. I have flashing lights front and back.
I haven't ever had a problem with the police(yet)....

Nah they're just grateful we've got lights at all.
Secondly if the light clips on and off it is not permanently affixed
Flashing lights are still frowned on or indeed barred in Audax events.

The rear reflector that came with my new road bike clipped onto the seat frame and I had to take it off to fit my wedge pack so none on mine. I do have lights front and rear though

What a strange policy. Flashing lights have been legal for years, they're arguably more visible than static lights, and as motorists aren't allowed to use flashing lights (except as indicators) they immediately highlight the presence of a vulnerable road user.

The've never been banned on any audax (I do wonder where some get their ideas from). They are disuaded in group riding because they are bloody annoying if you have to follow one for a long distance. Also flashing lights make it far harder to judge distance than a steady light.

Oh, and @raleighnut flashing lights are legal. See the CTC link up-thread.

Reflective tyre sidewalls work well and there's something in the regulations about it being legal to use them instead of spoke reflectors.

All bikes must have reflectors on the front and back when they are sold but once you are out of the shop they are not required as said earlier to fit a wedge bag the rear one gets in the way and with so many gadgets on the bars that one gets in the way too

I don't do technical riding anymore (haven't for several years) so I'm replacing the very heavy full suss Saracen with the hardtail Trek.

This is my current baby, Rambo...
