I'm going to buy a helmet now that I havbe taken up cycling again after quite a few years absence, but there is an awful lot to choose from.

True you don't want too cheap, as your life could be at stake, but surely some of them are over-priced.

Are there any recommendations from the readers

I go walking in the mountains and know that quality is always far more important than cost, where 'safety' is concerned.

Any tips would be appreciated

Regards !

I suspect that the protection factor is pretty similar for all helmets. They are only going to offer limited protection against hitting a kerb or the road.

As far as I can tell price seems to reflect weight, ventilation and fashion.

A £40 helmet will give you the same protection as a £100 one.The difference will be in weight, venting and more adjustment options.I use a Giro Atmos

Don't get one with a visor on.

..or if you do just take it off before wearing it!

Another +1 for the Giro Atmos - fits really well, good ventilation and you'll probably find it cheaper online.
