I was wondering if anyone has any idea on which is the best hotel with a reasonable price is fairly close to the velodrome? I have had a quick look online and the Travelodge has awful reviews. The premier inn and holiday inn have good reviews but thought I would get some first hand recommendations from here. Thank you!

Given the Velodrome is only about 2 miles from the City Centre and there is a tram stop right near it, you have a huge choice of hotels. Don't limit your choice to a hotel right on the NCC's doorstep.

Diamond Lodge is said to be OK by people I know who have used it, Village at Ashton-under-Lyne is good but possibly pricey, HI Express is OK and well used, HI on Oldham Road is just about OK (tired) but overpriced for what it is, worth trying for a deal depending on which/how many nights you want. There are ofetn a lot of BC people in there, but I would bet that's because they have a special rate.
Avoid the centre of Manchester which is expensive, the Travel Lodge is not too good, check Premier Inns in the area, always worth a look. Then Trivago might have a few pointers as well.

The tram stop outside is all well and good if you're not bringing your bike with you. TfGM play at being bike friendly but aren't. No bikes on trams, small folders under cover is all that they officially allow.
Man City are immediately adjacent to NCC, you could contact their ticket office too & see if they have a list of recommendations for travelling football fans.

Travelodges are terrible places; for some reason they seem to have become the "one night stand" and stag hotel of choice so are full of noisy puking drunks. Premier Inns are usually OK. If your budget allows it, I recommend the Novotel in Portland Street, which has variable rates according to demand and is in an excellent location with a car park underneath. That's where I always put overseas visitors. It's 5 minutes walk from the bus station, 20 from the railway station and 10 from the metro and is surrounded by restaurants and a Joseph Holts pub.

...they are silly cheap if booked in advance / in a rubbish location

I would nt use the hotels/lodges around the velo or in the city ... they never look clean when passing/going to the track

As said above at night .. I would imagine they are a bad place to sleep at night

Stockport (south Manchester) on the main road in to Manchester A6 there is a restaurant with a premier inn attached on/off the A6

not sure if you have transport ... If not there is a bus (192) that will take you in to the city then get the tram to the velo doorstep

Thanks everyone. We will be travelling down to Manchester from Cumbria by car. We will both have a bike with us for the course which runs sat and sun so we thought we would have an overnighter away from the kids ;) We have never been to the NCC so weren't sure whether we could park there and stay somewhere further out or were better close by. Will have to sit down and read some reviews I think.

I would stop at the Holiday Inn , its only about half a mile away from the velodrome and its not in what I would call the nice part of Manchester so a large chain hotel is the place to stay, either that or go for a city centre one, as the centre is approx.. 10mins on a bike.

just to remind, you will not be allowed your bikes on the tram, your best bet as you're driving is to drive to the velodrome from wherever you stop - I'm guessing you're bringing track bikes so not wanting to put the tyres down on tarmac so distance is less of a hurdle. Within 10 miles or so of the NCC you can be into some nice quiet countryside and the nicer quiet little village B&Bs / pubs.

Or for cheap & convenient there is a travelodge about 3 miles away just on the right side of Ashton under Lyne at the junction of Lord Sheldon Way & the A635 Manchester Road (which splits onto the A662 which goes right to the NCC door). It is also bang on the Ashton junction (23) of the M60 so you'd be straight off the motorway to booking in within a matter of moments.
The Travelodge is just that, a bland generic place to go to sleep, the Pub/restaurant next door The Sheldon Arms is a pleasant place to spend an evening, friendly staff, decent food and booze, comfy surroundings. On the downside, theres nowhere to go if you fancy stretching your legs.

The NCC has recently improved the car park a bit, although it is still quite small, but there is a very large Asda next door with plenty of parking space and they only seem to object to football fans.
