Didn't the taxman pay for the roads your are driving on or did you pay for them yourself?
No, we paid for them.

I'm surprised how many cc posters seem to have made the same mistake and are claiming they've halved their bill by driving 200 miles and so on.

I have read that 4 times now and still cannot work out what you mean, perhaps somebody will explain it too me.

About what I did last month  (but then I did visit a lot of family)

It's normally about 600 miles/month between two of us. Still too much really, but we do tend to go places with the kid at the weekend.

As petrol prices haven't dropped by 50%, drive as far as you like and you still won't 'half your fuel bill'
There are other ways to half you bill. I've just sorned my car (fun to drive ) and bought a new one (not so fun to drive). I've instantly gone from 18 mpg to over 40.
