It seems people who are rich and famous have all ready been well rewarded for their services to <thing>. It would be wonderful if these awards were reserved for people who have quietly got on with it and not been excessively rewarded.

It might surprise people given what I wrote above, but my father received an AM (Australian version of MBE, I think) and I can't even tell you exactly why, there was nothing remarkable about his career but he worked hard, stepped up when he was needed, made things happen and kept the wheels turning. Mostly beyond what he was paid for in his two professions and unrecognised by all but a small group of colleagues. But that group of colleagues were grateful enough that they put in the hard graft it takes to submit someone for an honour.

Honestly, if he had made half a billion pounds from his efforts, the medal would have seemed much less important

There are parallels with Stella McCartney, her name - and possibly a few quid from daddy - may have secured her first show, but thereafter it's down to talent, hard work and, of course, some luck.

I think it's the opposite. Fashion is all about name. I find McCartney's work to quite notable in it's awfulness. I used to walk by Sweaty Betty (workout fashion store) and if there was a piece of workout kit in the window with a pointless sticky-out-bit on it I'd stop to check and it would always be Stella McCartney.

So I just googled her website, landed on http://www.stellamccartney.com/gb/o...2G8c41T5PjEDEwivnbYDw-ML0aAlZp8P8HAQ&tp=62356 and everything on that page is either (in)offensively bland to the point of anonymity or ... awful. Eg.

Seriously, if you saw someone dressed like that at Asda, would you think they had dropped well over £1000 on one of Britain's top designers or that they should up their prozac dose?

In the fashion game, if your designs are crap or not up to scratch then you won't go far, You'll crash and burn, however well known you are or how much money you have. Speaking to someone I know who is in the fashion game, she say's that VB has a natural eye and talent for it.

Good for her. She went into the music business with little talent but lots of ambition and made a success of it. Parlayed this success to get into something she has a real talent for. I think it's fair to say that if she hadn't had the music success she wouldn't have been in a position to exploit her talent for design

I would agree with the sentiment that extremely successful high profile individuals should not be what the honours system is about. It's not a reward as they don't need a reward. It's not a motivator to others to do the same. I'd like to see the honours system focus almost exclusively on those individuals doing remarkable, selfless things for little or no reward

Meh. It's indistinguishable from those photos from £25 from Asda stuff, despite costing 20 times as much. And it's only available up to size 14 - no good for half the female population.
