It seems people who are rich and famous have all ready been well rewarded for their services to <thing>. It would be wonderful if these awards were reserved for people who have quietly got on with it and not been excessively rewarded.
It might surprise people given what I wrote above, but my father received an AM (Australian version of MBE, I think) and I can't even tell you exactly why, there was nothing remarkable about his career but he worked hard, stepped up when he was needed, made things happen and kept the wheels turning. Mostly beyond what he was paid for in his two professions and unrecognised by all but a small group of colleagues. But that group of colleagues were grateful enough that they put in the hard graft it takes to submit someone for an honour.
Honestly, if he had made half a billion pounds from his efforts, the medal would have seemed much less important
