They sell B'Twin bikes I think, not Decathlon bikes.
Decathlon doesn't sell its own bikes?

Welcome ^_^ - great to see you here.

The 'Decathlon' which has been mentioned is a sports chain store - I've seen them on the continent, but not over here, however, a quick check shows they're pretty strong in the UK too. Link is here, I've gone straight to mountain bikes for you, as it looks as if they have some promotions on the site at the moment:
http://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-359112-mountain-bikes?opeco=opeco:HP-C3-Mountain-Bikes&type=Range
however, the home page will also navigate you to other products too, which is worth exploring.

They also have 'advice/buying guide' pages here:
http://www.decathlon.co.uk/user-guide-cycling.html

Lots of different views on here about roads - I'm pretty timid myself, and overcoming my anxieties about road cycling was something I had to do in the end, when preparing for a longer road ride event I wanted to do - so while I think some have been a little harsh in their response to a newbie post, don't take that too much to heart.

Oh, and enjoy cycling!:bicycle::bicycle::bicycle:
Thanks.

I'm not sure it's wise to buy sight unseen off the internet, to be honest.

North Somerset - can you get to Bristol?
http://www.thebristolbikeproject.org/our-services/buy-a-bike

and this group looks as if it's doing some great work:

They're having a sale (which is open to anyone) this Thursday morning:
http://www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=2748

This is a larger list of projects in your area that might be worth looking through; you'll know exactly where you'd be prepared to go, and what your circumstances are:

Also, if you'd rather have new, get across to Evans in Bristol for a browse/try out, and get a feel of the sorts of things that suit you when you actually ride them. Doesn't mean to say you have to buy from there, but it helps you narrow down what to look for on ebay/gumtree/preloved if you do start to go into the £200 region.

More than 100 miles? Then ok, it perhaps is ;) You can take bikes on the train, although most rail companies have restrictions during the morning and evening rush hour

No, it's not 100 miles. But it is too far for me to cycle because I'm not fit. THat's why i want a bike.

I have spoken to the train station before and they said they couldn't guarantee being able to get a seat. Can't really take the chance of being stuck in Bristol with a bike I can't get back.

i've seen the lifecycle sales before. They didn't strike me as the sort of bike that was good for much more than getting to the shops. I could be wrong. Anyway I don't think I can make thursday.

Gumtree never has anything locally and ebay requires that people collect in person - not surprisingly with private sales.

It's surprisingly difficult finding a bike. Pot luck I guess.

I'm sorry, then. Other than friends, family, local obvious sources of second hand and local auctions, good local bike shops, using national dealers who carry big amounts of stock to help you find something you like and then source competitively online then there's not much else I can suggest I'm afraid. All the best with your search anyway, and I hope you find something that works for you.
