That's it, i'm giving it up! This afternoon i had my third off of the year. This time is was my fault, i hit a speed hump at a poor angle and came off. The front wheel turned right i went left and hit the ground. Once again my helmet took the force and my safety glasses also broke in the bump. My knee is cut open for the third time this year(god knows what my physiotherapist will say on Thursday) my knuckles are cut and skinned and my left thigh feels like it's been hit with a baseball bat. A nice couple came out their house to help, with tea, plasters and the offer of a lift to the hospital. I thanked them but declined the hospital lift then made my way home.
So as from now that's it no more riding the roads on 23mm tyres thinking that i'm in the TdF.no more whizzing round bends, no more ascending hills at 40 odd mph..it ends here! The Cube bike i bought last week is still in the box. I hope Chain Reaction Cycles have a returns policy, I'm just glad i didn't take it out the box and it was the new bike i crashed today and not my old bike. I've decided to get myself a hybrid or a cyclo cross bike and do a bit of off road at a slower pace. I can't risk it again so here's to 30 odd years of roadie happiness it was fun!!

If you're ascending hills at 40 odd mph, then forget just thinking you're in the Tour de France, you should enter!

But seriously...I hope your injuries aren't too sore. Why not give yourself a few days to think it over?

GWS...I know what you mean about the physio...mine despairs...today she told me no more 100 mile rides once I've got through the 2nd August. To be fair, she hasn't banned me from riding, just falling off! I too have taken 3 own fault tumbles this year  From three different bikes though, so I can't blame the equipment

I've been thinking about it for a while. Especially after being hit by a car the other month. I don't think i can judge what's ahead of me like i used to due to losing sight in my right eye. I've been relying on luck and the thought that someone's watching over me to get by this last year or so. It's not all doom and gloom i'll still be on two wheels just a little slower. The amount of cars on the road increasing over the years doesn't help either, Eee! when i were a lad you didn't see one from one day to the next!;)

If your really no longer comfortable, it's probably a good shout. However, don't rush into things but, hopefully, it will be a one door closing, one door opening scenario.

I had a cheapie mountain bike 20 years ago. I went all over on it without thinking about how slow and cumbersome it was. A cyclo cross bike will give me more options and be comfier than the Apollo heavyweight, so i'm not downhearted!

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I hope you get well soon. Being a roadie isn't the be all and end al of life. You can have just as much fun on a hybrid, going at a slower pace and getting off the beaten track. In fact you may enjoy it even more. Its great to find tracks and traffic free lanes to wander down. It's quieter, and less stressful.

Fixed wheel fanatic.
GWS.
Having a tumble does make you think twice. I know I don't descend anywhere near as quickly as I used to, just aware of my own breakability I guess.
Hopefully you'll get your mojo back after a bit of a rest.

Go on; you know you want one ....... (It's a Specialized Tricross sport disc, BTW.. My Tricross has lugs for racks, and doubles as a reasonable tourer).

Gws. There's loads of people round here that drive to quiet places and ride around on tracks, not the steep decents down Winlatter stuff but seems pretty good fun
