Imagine a world where motorists had to maintain the roads they used.

Ask them why they're paying Keir's (the company, not the other twit) shareholders if cash is so tight? They harrumph and cough a lot when I ask but never trot out a straight answer.

Because it is still cheaper than doing it themselves.

Whether their priorities are right regarding which work needs doing first is another question entirely. But I would expect councils to be outsourcing the work to specialist companies.

The taxation of motor vehicles needs a top down change, IMHO pay per mile is the only sensible and fair option, but I'd go further and add in a multiplier for vehicle weight, or some sort of damage / wear to roads caused scoring. You'd then encourage manufactures to produce lighter and more efficient vehicles that are kinder to the roads.

It won't happen though. People take cheap motoring for granted, and feel entitled to it, so there'll be riots if anyone tries to change that.

Best to go for a golden oldie.

Vehicles exempt from vehicle tax

If your vehicle was built before 1 January 1985, you can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2025.

Not necessary to go back that far. Lower emission vehicles were exempt from VED for many years and carry than exemption on. My 2013 Fiesta is exempt.
Think its time they came up with a tax on a vehicles weight given the road damage that is no doubt being caused by EVs
eg A Peugeot 208EV is around a third heavier that its petrol equivalent.

It is inevitable with the decline of ICE cars. The loss of revenue (both VED and fuel duty) will have to be replaced somehow.

You're wrong, they are aware and have no objection.

Please can you ensure your testicle is properly packaged in ice in a sealed container before posting to me.

Thank you for your attention in this matter.
Ah, no I won't be voluntary removing my left tested, as I was not placing it in a bet, I was inferring the OP ought to do so.
Any case Rubes, why would you want my shrivelled left plum, it's not much use to me, doubtless absolutely useless to you, but he- ho, people to collect all manner of worthless 'junk'.
Balls included.

The popular press and some motoring organisations would be calling it a war on motorists.
