The last greasy spoon i went to for a breakfast was certainly an experience.

The 'chef' had a huge hotplate at his disposal, and worked his way through the orders one at a time and incredibly slowly. When he finally started preparing our breakfasts, one slice of bread went on the hot plate first, a while later a couple of frozen sausages went into a deep fat fryer and sliced mushrooms went into a pan. Cold fat was poured over the 'shrooms, then he turned the heat on  ...by which point, the 'fried' bread was totally burnt and he hadn't even got round to putting the bacon or anything else on the huge hot plate he had at his disposal. He put another slice of bread on (second time lucky), still no sign of any bacon... the mushrooms were nowhere near done, but the two sausages were. Not only did he have no idea how to make a breakfast... the idea of making two at once was completely beyond him. At this point we suggested he stop, asked for our money back and left.

Beans in a ramekin is a crime against all that is good in the world.
Honestly what are they thinking when they do that? They don't serve the rest of the meal up with everything else on an individual piece of crockery do they?*

Decent greasy spoons are getting harder to find, so I'm glad you've found a good one. Although I'm not sure about that tomato - should be tinned toms on a breakfast, really.

* - possibly they do in some poncey London places, along with putting the tea in a jam jar instead of a mug...

I still miss 'Dunnies' (officially the 'Wharfe View Cafe') in Otley
It was literally yards from the River Wharfe, & in summer, you'd have to queue to even sit outside
Heck!, on nice winter days, I've waited for an outside table

@DCLane , @NorthernDave. @Old jon will have known it

It used to be a regular stopping point, but not the place to over-face yourself, unless you were following the valley roads, as heading out up through Farnley, towards Norwood Edge ("Norrud") & the 'Golfballs' at Menwith Hill, or East Chevin, or Carr Bank (towards the 'Spite' pub) all would result in a return of the mealxx(

Plus, if you wanted it, there was 'free' bread & butter too

Not that far from me, there's the RedBeck, on the Doncaster Road (about 4 miles south-east of the centre of Wakefield)
It's historically a transport café, but has tried to go a bit upmarket
I'm not sure about now, but for a lot of years, there wasn't even a lock on the (main public) doors!

There was a sister café. over near Howden, at Boothferry Bridge, but that closed due to decreasing trade
It was on the old route/bridge over the Ouse, which was literally superceded, when the M62 crossed over it (between junctions 37 & 38)

Question
Is the Motorman(?) still in business, up on the A62, west of Marsden?

I needed to go to Bolton this morning and had a spare hour so I went to a fully unreconstructed greasy spoon....The Butty Box, Chorley Old Road

2 x bacon, 2 x sausage, 2 x egg, 2 x toast, beans (no ramekin), mushrooms, tomatoes, cup of tea

I was up Chorley Old Road today, I know where I'll be calling in next time I'm there.

Cholesterol Heaven.

Really good spot. Massive portions, great staff, fresh grub. Much better than OP snap, which looks at very best “almost edible”.

You can certainly tell it's a fully unreconstructed example - the clues are the little flecks of black burnt fat all over everything, and the 'toast' that is raw bread over a third of its surface. £3.50? You were robbed. xx(

It was all cooked on a hot plate thingy and I suspect it's only cleaned once a day. I'd agree the toast wasn't toasted enough

But at £3.50 you're talking nonsense to say I was robbed. Great value

The Motorman just outside Marsden closed this summer just gone.
The owners sold up and retired after 40 years running it.

New owners have turned the property into housing apparently....

This is not far from me and actually only 5 mins from where I used to live, but I don't get over there much mowadays, yet funnily enough I crossed Chorley Old Road last Sunday at this exact spot, and when closed it actually looks like it's shut down. This assumption struck me as a shame as I've a fair few brekkies from here over the years and it was always a decent gaff, glad to hear it's still going and serving good grub :mrpig: :okay:
