Hi everyone,

as some of you may know I got knocked off my bike a few weeks ago. The accident caused some pain in my right knee and although i've been to the hospital and docs they said nothing is broken or anything seriously wrong. The doctor even said so long as it feels ok then I am ok to cycle still. Well over xmas I haven't done much apart from use the rollers and due to their being no resisance my knee has felt ok. When using the bike on the road today it is causing bother again. I can cycle ok but it feels uncomfortable and just doesn't feel right (like it clicks and grinds quite badly).

Basically I just want to know if it's likely that I have done some long term damage due to not getting it seen to sooner. I think i'm going to book an appointment with a physio to get it looked at. I'm just really worried that I should have rested from the say it happened (i've cycled prob 200 miles or more since it happened and although no major pain it can;t be doing it any good?)

I know obvisouly nobody can say if it will be ok or not, just wondered what people thought? I totally love cycling and it's really getting me down at the thought of not being able to train for racing in the coming season.

Any impact on your body will cause the area to be bruised and sore. God knows, I've crashed and taken a few injuries more times than I can remember. The most painful is ribs but I've ridden through the pain and still done OK.

In my second season I won our club open 50 mile TT (beating Ian Cammish) and next day went on holiday to Devon with the family taking my bike. 2 days into the holiday going along the coast road in the rain on a downhill stretch I lost it on a bend and hit a car coming the other way. Didn't go underneath the car but slid along the road and smashed into the front of it. Badly knocked up my ribs, very very painful but I'd entered a 50 mile TT the next weekend in Devon, rode it and finished 2nd to the local fast man.

However knees are part of the power transmission and the pain might be an indication of something more serious. Personally I would grit my teeth, take a couple of painkillers and carry on. But I'm not sensible when it comes to things like that.

I used to get pain in my right knee after 10 -12 miles. My physio suggested i cycle through it and see if it disapears and it has. I would definately visit a physio as there are lots of different causes of knee pain.

Thanks for both of your replies. I'm also like you Bill and have kept on going since the accident hoping it will just go away but it's getting to me know and making me worry as you know it's my first season coming up so want to be in good shape. I've been asking on my club forum about a Physio and have been recommended some so will have a visit asap and see what they say.

I'll let you know the outcome.

might be a bit of the wall, but.....i was hit from behind when driving and ended up at physio and docs with elbow trouble. they told me to take 1600mg of ibuprofen a day. after a few weeks i started having problems and one of them was a sore knee joint. anyway it turns out i'm allergic to ibuprofen and the sore knee was one of the reactions. are you taking painkillers?

Hi Brompton,

No I haven't took any painkillers. I wish it was the problem though! It's not really painful, just uncomfortable. It sort of feels twisted aswell.

oh i forgot, the physio told me to put ice packs on my elbow (the reason i was there) for a max of 10 minutes every day, it really did help. the idea being to get the inflammation down. i ended up with a cortizone injection. whilst it was painful and makes you ill for a day or 2, the elbow pain seems to have gone. ironic that i went to the docs last and was injected a couple days later. what i am trying to say is, get to docs and ask if cortizone is a possibility for your case.

Well went to an osteopath tonight, I know it's obviously not physio but it's only along the road and she could see me tonight so thought i'd see what she said.

She reckons I haven't damaged any ligaments or cartledge which is good. She said that my calf will have shortened slightly because of the shock to my knee. Something like that anyway, it was like a biology lesson! She also done something with my calf which had me in agony but she said it will sort of reset it. She has gave me some stretches to do and told me to wear shoes in the house with a heel on and I should see an improvement over the next week.

I'm a bit sceptical to be honest but will see what happens. Only cost £16 so can't complain.

I would seriously save cortisone injections as a next to last call (surgery being last) - if they don't work, they can damage the ligaments and cause more grief. A physio is a much better bet (osteopaths definitely aren't physios) and if you can find one who specialises in sports injuries so much the better as they will be able to diagnose the injury/problem and give treatment for relief as well as exercises to improve the recovery time and outcome. I've had more injuries over the years than you could poke a stick at and have probably paid thousands of pounds to the 3 or 4 physios I've been seen by and I don't regret a single penny of it - they've always been able to get me back on the bike/feet/water as soon as possible and minimise the possibility of future problems. When I sprained my ankles as a teenage runner, I never had proper treatment and I'm now reaping the repercussions - so get thee to a proper physio

Hi Fiona, thanks for your reply. Since the accident I haven't rested but for the last few days i've done no cycling or been to the gym and plan to kee doing nothing until Monday. I'll try cycling then and if I get any problem still with my knee i'm going to see a physio. Like i've said i'm a bit sceptical about the visit to the osteopath so will see what happens.

There is a lady who is a member of my club who works as a physio and she specialises in cycling and knee injuries so couldn't be a better person for the job really! I'll give her a call if need be.
