I just use WIndows defender like most people. I would just stay off dodgy site and don't download software from peer to peer torrent sites etc. These often have viruses in the keygen/crack applications.

Where I work everything is backed up to a server. Last week an outside contractor came in whom supplies printers/copiers etc, had some drivers to put on the server, gave a USB stick to the administrator to install them to the server. There are obviously faults here and hindsight is a great thing, but you've got to learn from it, instead of saying "this should have happened, being in-place" or whatever. The stick had the BOPADOR virus on it, hidden somewhere. This has totally wiped the server, encrypted all the files with a really complex encryption key. A message is left with a ransom demand and an email address, in this case it is 2.3 Bitcoin's, which I believe is getting on for 20 grand, the recipient is thought to be based in Lithuania. I'm sure that these people cannot be trusted, but at the same time the information lost is vast.

I guess what I'm trying to say as I'm no expert, but it goes without saying anything at all of any value on a computer should be backed-up. After dealing with bigger companies that only allow their own personal drives to be used on any of their computers, no outside devices now allowed. I kind of thought that this was some corporate over-the-top carry-on.. I kind of get it now and agree with it.

This is not really applicable to the post, but I kind of thought this kind of thing was a fallacy or something. It also got my thinking if a hacker/malicious software ever got into some huge company or some vital computer system.

But just use Windows defender. I've used other in the past and found them a bit too intrusive, but that was ages ago..

So what is this malware bytes many people talk of, and how/where do I download it from if sites are not to be trusted? And is it free or subscription

From the obvious place - malwarebytes.com - NOT ScummyFakeMalwarebytes.com! :okay:

The basic version is free but you have to run that manually. The paid version can be set to check things in the background and/or at regular intervals. I just run it every now and then manually. (Which I haven't done for ages, so will do now!)

  • Just too much computer jargon stuff for me. I've been mostly offline for the last few days due to my laptop getting loads of viruses. I can't be arsed with that 'take it to an expert who'll sort it for you',so i just binned the bag of shoot and bought a new one today. I got the cheapest one from PC World for £150. Yes,it only has an 11 inch(or is it 11.5?) screen, but it's better than that second hand crap i bought in January for £200 from a local shop! I had trouble with it from day one. So much for buying locally to help local businesses. Don't buy 'pre-loved' if you can afford new!!

Had always used Norton but reading generally people using MS Windows Defender okay had intended on using that only to remember I had access to BTs McAffee offering. Seemed alright until I tried to access my network hard drive and whilst it was recognised I could not access the files on it. Seems to be a well known issue with McAffee and having spent far too long trying to resolve deleted program and so hello to Windows Defender.

Apologies to McAffee, transpired it was a Windows setup issue which has me puzzled because I had to switch on the relevant setting, SMB 1, the other week temporarily as a W10 update automatically switched it off yet two other as up to date W10 devices still have it enabled:wacko:

I hate McAffee.
