As dave r said What ever works for you. , Theres a difference in a club cyclist thats cycling 250 miles a week a bike just used for shopping and a MTB used of road.
A bike used for a few miles a week shopping etc may get away with little cleaning and a few drops of oil every few months.
A MTB used off road may need a good clean and lubricated every outing.
Club cyclist (in my view) after runs of 40 to 100 miles if weather is good be able to use baby wipes or similar after every run and lubricate every second or third outing or if its wet clean and lubricate every outing.
Only my view but i can get about 4 months from a good quality chain and up to a year with cassettes as long as i keep them clean and lubricated as for best way to clean your chain bit like asking how long is a bit of string or whats the best breakfast, no right answer for everyone but lots of wrong answers?
