When i was living in southern Spain i took my Nissan for its first ITV(mot).
They did all the usual stuff but never tested the washers and wipers.
I was telling a Spanish friend about it and not testing the washers/wipers and he said "they don't matter, hardly ever rains here".

Our '08 Polo passed yesterday, a couple of anti roll bar links, a repeater bulb on one of the mirrors which I hadn't noticed and an advisory on a CV boot which I'll be getting done next week. Oil and filter and new plugs at the same time, so should be ok for another year apart from three new tyres which will need changing before the winter kicks in.

Always a relief with an elderly car when it isn't written off due to structural rust.

September is a busy month for MOTs, we have 3 in this month all passed, no repairs required.

Same here !

Although in pre-MOT checks and just double checking the missing exhaust bolt on the Aygo, the flange that's attached to the one piece manifold/cat is badly corroded - i.e. where the exhaust bolts to. Was planning on drilling out the broken bolt, and replacing both, but on trying to undo the existing 'working bolt I could see it moving captive nut and flange - it's corroded. I noticed last night on picking my daughter up that the exhaust was a little loud on the dual carriageway.

It's due tomorrow, so will call garage and tell them what's wrong, and see if they can MOT and fail, then book in for repair/retest, or just cancel and book in for repair/test.

Might be easier to fail (and have full MOT done in case anything else needs doing), get diagnosis then book for repair. At worst it's a new Cat/manifold, which is about £250 incl. VAT on an Aygo (plus fitting). The whole exhaust, including cat is just 4 years old. Not sure fitting a 'repair' flange would be a good idea. It's only made of thin metal.

Not worried about the other two cars, both due November.

Spectacular fail. Cat needed as expected, but both headlamps needed (been polished up, but starting to fade), some suspension issues, and welding needed underneath body near rear suspension (typical of these cars). These are the fails. So £300cat, £200 headlamps, then welding and fitting. So booked for scrap collection this afternoon.

RIP little Aygo. PS can't be bothered with the hassle of ebay spares/repair, and given we ended up with a broken Aygo (of the same age) that my son was fixing up on the drive for 6 months, not doing that again. Needs to go as it's parked on the road as we've no off road parking for it. It will save me a fortune in insurance costs. Might be time to look for an electric run about !

Car will be gone before my son get's home. Once collected I'll cancel the insurance, which is £1k a year. Son will be like 'I could have fixed it'... hmm, there is still an engine and two doors off the other Aygo in my side garden...

Makes me wonder on the validity of some cars MOTs when you see the state of them ?
A good true MOT isn't an easy thing to pass if you have an older car...

Quite. They don't mess about at my local garage, which is good. It's history of passing has been excellent, but this latest cat failure is expensive, then add on the on-going potential rust battles.

I'm glad for the space as my son has two cars. Down to four now. He has plans to move out, so, fingers crossed there will just be two cars at our house, and no trailers, sometime next year.

And I won't miss the £85 a month insurance !

My "new" (to me) Honda is in tomorrow. Needs an indicator bulb, which is a surprising balls-ache as it needs the wheel removed and panel removal from below ffs. Anyhow hopefully not too bad otherwise

How far can I go?

My wife and I just purchased a new to us car (2018 Kia Stonic with 30,000 miles on the clock, and has all sorts of bells and whistles).
Which leaves us wondering what to do with our 2009 Kia Picanto with 152,000 miles on the clock. It's the first time we've ever owned 2 cars.
Anyway, the Picanto's going in for it's MOT next month. It's never had major issues (fails have been tyres, linkage, a belt, light bulbs, etc), and been relatively inexpensive repairs overall.
The trade-in value for the car is £86 (it's had a rough life).
So what do we think will be wrong with it?
Or should be just scrap it?
