Peroni's OK for a light refreshing drink.
Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser Budvar are both good originals.
A few of us here have a liking for French Jupiler.
Spanish Mahou Green (the Red is too strong).
Singha
Then there are the Belgians...

* Part of Lager's problem is that a) there is too much crap, Stella, Carling, Fosters, Carlesberg etc and B) it's always served too cold.

I agree - proper lager (especially Belgian and Czech) is delicious.

There's a lovely organic lager they sell on draught around Goodwood - they brew it there along with an organic ale. Fantastic, both of them.

In the winter I go for thr ale, but in the summer you can't beat a cool lager.

You can also buy bottles of it in the Goodwood farm shop if you're in the area

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

I used to have a girlfriend as contrary as you.

i dumped her. B)

Not being obtuse, and if being contrary means not having the same opinion as yourself, then by jove im the last word in contrariness. I am simply saying that i myself am a lover of the artois, based purely on its wonderful, to me, taste. i guess i also have to add that its fairly strong at about 5.2 abv and therefore hits the spot. I choose it not because of some mind warping media brainwashing either because then, following your logic, i would be a snob as stella is marketed as "reassuringly expensive". And a snob is wot i am not.

armchair psychologists and hobbyist sociologists will not bally well convince me that the essence of artois, of which i was practically weaned, is "crap".

why i even named my little ginger kitten stella..........here she is the one in the middle.....

THe most famous Belgian lager being.....Stella!

At least Stella's now suitable for veggies.

(Most decent Belgian beer btw is actually ale.)

Point of order, Chairman: Stella Artois is no longer marketed as Reassuringly Expensive - not since 2007 my sources tell me

Contextually, didn't used to be the only strong lager / beer at 5.2% in a market of otherwise ~3% beer & so making it distinctive?*

It was more expensive because of the duty levied on the alcohol content

(*Maybe Red Stripe excluded at 4.7%)

your sources you say, do you have sources at the ready for any given topic, or just for this one, in which case you waited for your moment, this being it, and pounced with your stella artois pertinent facts source ?

Is it drinking stella that makes you so contrary ?

Why not try a glass of Bitburger lager of better still, a soothing pint of Dunkerton's cider ? They will soon make you feel better . . . so my sources tell me

Actually, I rather like a cold Stella sometimes. It's good stuff if I'm planning on impairing my faculties over the course of an evening and I can't afford to buy a lot of "proper" beer.

I tend to reach for the meths if I've got that problem (obviously with a lemonade top - I'm not a philistine)

Under normal circumstances, when the world is spinning safely on its axis, there is a prevailing wind and a slight downward incline i am not contrary. But to quote Fat Boy Slim, "the world is made up of this and that". In other words we are all little individuals with our own little opinions and as long as pepes do not try and state that mine are "crap", or "rubbish", as actual fact, then what with the aforementioned pre-existing conditions being met, contrary im not.

Now cider does lend itself to making ole c2c contrary, chopsy is how i think Ms c2c has described it. I am a particular fan of Natural Dry, as it was called when i first partook, but trouble usually ensues when topped up to the gills with Natch. So i steer clear. If and when Stella is not available, then i will accept Peroni, or San Miguel, draught preferably.

Oh and i seem to be able to consume veritable vats of artois, the legs go eventually, and speech is impaired, but i have not ever battered any of my wives.

Had my last exam of the year today, went straight to the pub after and inspired by this thread, i bought a bottle of Magner's for one round. Sat out in the beer garden, nice  Then i got back to the black stuff. When i head out on the town tonight, i'll be sure to buy lots of cheap alcohol, with only one intention, I won't care what it tastes of.

In my opinion - you can compare these two scenarios, but are they really comparable?

I wasn't saying they are exactly comparable - just that they are different examples of socialisation - the exact method by which that occurs in each case is very different. And I'm not making a value judgement about either one. Darkstar is welcome to his Magners, Sato-san can keep his Asahi and DP his Chouffe... I was simply commenting on the things that underlie preferences and 'taste' being not quite as some people think.
