Strange thread this but I bet it resonates with outdoorsy types.

I'm just starting getting back into angling after a couple of decades of inactivity. Needless to say I no longer have all my old go to angling thermals which I used to rely on to keep warm back in the day.

Lightbulb moment! Why don't I layer up with my cycling gear. I went fishing yesterday with my cycling base layers, skull cap under my hat, leg warmers under my pants and cycling socks! And over the coming cooler months my thermal cycling gloves will come in handy too!

Who knows, I might even start taking my bike with me. Then if the fish aren't biting I can go for a ride!! Lol.

Base layer... We used to call it underwear back in the day and, it was always mult-activity. We didn't have special sets for cycling, angling, sleeping, camping, church and dancing. Then the BDS word "thermal" crept in in the 1990s. Totally meaningless. Now it is "thermal base layer."

So yes, I'm pretty sure your underwear can serve both activities.

Happy fishing. Bring home something big and don't mind those other boys in lakeside- dedicated camo sniggering at your Team Jumbo-Visma arm warmers.

When I used to wear a helmet cycling I used my caving helmet. But that said it's only in modern times I've ever had cycling clothes per se, but I think my winter cycling jacket, a rather nice Assos windproof / semi-waterproof fleece would be pretty good for general purpose use, or even hillwalking, albeit cut slightly oddly for walking about. I do wear their three part winter gloves set hillwalking though the waterproof outer is maybe too fragile to regularly hold an ice axe

Years ago, when l worked in Leeds, & rode in, l wore ‘Troll’ rock-climbing tights, as they were very visible!!
Mindst you, so was that Orbit frame!

Note the Shimano shoes, the ones that had the 2” square carbon-fibre insert in the soles
Plus, l think that’s a Two Wheels Good jersey?
(that’s where l bought the Orbit, & our Marin MTBs from)

Then, when l started running (about 2007), l wore jerseys/bib-tights initially

Yes, there are times when cycling to get to something or somewhere I'd like to not look like I've cycled there.
Summer you can blag it with shorts and polo shirt.
Winter and the need for warm, wind and waterproof becomes more important.
Thermals are out of sight. My waterproof jacket is violent yellow and cut for cycling. A wax jacket weighs a tonne.

What do other people wear for the street casual but smart look that a visit to those events where smart casual is required?

Just be careful any small worms are kept out of sight and inside your base layer 😁

Back to the running, as stated, before l bought specific clothing/joined a running club, l wore my club jerseys
Which, slightly pleasingly annoyed some of the club members
(didn’t rejoin it well before covid, but pay my BCF every year as a private member)

The Trunce
A 4 mile ‘out & back’, which was fairly tough in parts
Certainly a walk, at one part, as there were ‘steps’

Not sure if Auld Lang Syne, or Stanbury Splash?

Holy cow! If I was out riding dressed like that I'd take a bucket with me and I'd fill it with cash from people who thought I was on a sponsored ride, lol.

I couldn't go fishing dressed like that, I'd scare the fish away!

Dogtrousers

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
A lot of the gear I wear for winter riding isn't cycling specific. Gloves, trousers (Ronhill tricksters but only because they stopped making Altura Winter Cruisers), base layers, socks, buff and sometimes jacket (but I do have a bike specific jacket)

I've often used a merino base layer when fishing, skiing too as it's a useful piece of kit. I'm not sure I'd go as far as wearing arm or leg warmers etc under my clothes though.
I find that keeping dry, especially when catching a lot of fish and using the landing net is more important so waterproofs are a better idea.

Try Preston DriFish pants.

Apart from Lycra shorts and Ron Hill Bikesters, I don't use cycling clothing, it's all just 'ordinary' outdoor stuff. I decided to put up with the lack of wind resistance on the Bikesters when I got fed up of modifying polycotton walking trousers for cycling.

They don't sell Bikesters any more.

There's some kind of conspiracy by Big Tights because my favourite Winter Cruisers were withdrawn around the same time. My last pair of WCs had iron-on patches over iron-on patches. I wear Ronhill Tracksters with clip on braces these days.
