My new bank card will let me buy stuff at a checkout, but won't let me access my account from an ATM

... android systems have the same limit as the card you've linked to it.

This may have been the case in the past but it is not currently correct.

How do you expect to put your phone into the card reader?
I've never been asked to. I have no idea what point you are suposed to be making here?

If I remember right Apple have no payment limit, android systems have the same limit as the card you've linked to it.

I rather doubt the latter. My Credit card has an £18,000 limit, and I doubt any shop would let me use my phone contactless for that much.

Chase occasionally ask me to verify myself when making a phone payment (phone already unlocked) by using the fingerprint sensor before re-tapping the terminal to make the payment.

Ah. Yes, I have had that one occasionally. It happened at least once, might have been twice during the week in Sardinia I have just returned from.

What method would a shop selling items for that much (eg jewellers) make you use instead? They do let you. It’s the safest way for the shop. The limiting factor will be the authorisation from your bank… daily limit, credit limit, suspected fraud.

Most shops still have a relatively low limit - usualy £150 or £200, but still more than if using teh physical card contactless.
That is very much not true. I’ve never been blocked by the amount being used and I use it more than that really quite often. In fact I’ve used it for considerably more than that a number of times . Not once have I even been told that I cannot use that method of payment despite the vendor having that right.

The frightening thing is, I paid a substantial amount of cash on my debit card for my van. Just needed the pin, all went through, no notification on my app. Paying for the insurance, at the same time, had to use the app to verify £80 payment to the insurer !

Another reason for using your phone. There is no limit on that (or if there is, I haven't reached it yet ^_^ ).

Until you drop it on concrete, the battery is flat, or it just sulks.

I was surprised how easily my German card was accepted in the UK last month: the main problem was that about every fifth bus rejected it, and as they have a rather odd "tap on, tap off" system in York this immediately doubled the cost of travelling into the city from 1.50 Gbp to 3.00 Gbp...
