Dumbarton - Ancient Capital of Strathclyde, we have a castle where many Scottish historical figures like Mary Queen Of Scots and William Wallace are said to have stayed or been imprisonned. Also we have the cave where Robert The Bruce, on giving up, is said to have seen the now famous Spider repairing a web, and it inspired him perservere and carry on.
We had a Distillery that made Ballantines Whisky for years (possibly infamous?). Also, Jackie Stewart (yes, the Driver) lived here and the author Tobias Smollet was born nearby.
The Cutty Sark (no less) was built by Scott And Linton here along with many other ships, and a small part of the old yard at Denny Brothers (now a museum - 'The Denny Tank') still has a very large tank with a gantry crane above it. This is where they tested how different designs of boat and ship would fare given certain sea conditions in model form before the real thing was made or not. Apparently there are very few of these tanks left, so it has not been unknown for it still to be used to test things in recent times.
Apparently they also built Sunderland Flying Boats in the shadow of the castle during the war.
A few miles down the road in Clydebank, there were more ship yards, including John Brown's, where they built many famous ships, including the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, the QE2, and others such as HMS Hood.
Dumbarton is infamous for...... Ballantines Whisky (probably). Like almost everywhere else in this country, it is a mere ghost of its old self, although, the Soap 'River City' is filmed here too.
Oh and we are a few miles away from Faslane, Coulport and Glen Douglas.
Maybe a nuke or two would help the place these days!
