As newbie here too, may I wish you well in Afghanistan.

My son is about to go out there on a NATO staff job! But what they need a Royal Navy Engineering Lt Commander in the middle of a landlocked country goodness only knows.

But t'was ever thus --- I was a pongo Captain in Aden during its 2 last years which became "interesting"!

I also lived for some 12 + years in various parts of the Arabian Peninsular. Southern Oman in particular provided the odd bit of excitement and interest! -- but not, I suspect as "interesting " as Afghanistan.

Why not take your bike with you!!!!!!

These days I have enough excitement ( and a fair amount of "interesting" events) just cycling on the road every day.

My Dad was one of those, Fleet Air Arm. He specialised in pranging aeroplanes.

This one had 'Whoops!' written on the back.

I gather he did, yes, well,he always said he did, although we didn't discuss the pics as much as I wish we had now. There is another labelled on the back "My first jet carrier landing. Nervous? You bet!" and several of planes missing the arrester wire, which I gather was fairly common. This is a good one, you can see the prop blade flying off having hit the final safety net (which the undercarriage is about to trip over), and all the lads peering over the edge of the deck, presumably having just ducked...

Apparently, one of his ship transfer reports from a Captain read something like "Diligience: excellent, Ability to work with men: excellent, flying: ugh!"

That's quite fascinating. I thought you could write to the forces requesting information about service records. I've been thinking about doing it for my father. He served in WWII but spoke little about where he served and I seemed to have reached that age where researching my roots has increased in significance.

It's one of the things I intend to get round to one day. I did get as far as looking at the FAA website, but not much further (also, apparently, a lot of records are missing). My Mum has some information at home but I haven't gone into it in detail - partly because I feel a bit awkward about it, and partly because I never remember when I'm home...

I'd like to get to the FAA Museum one day, it was something Tom and I were going to go, but never got round to it. I know Dad was in Sri Lanka at once stage, and that he took part in quite a lot of Station amateur dramatics - all plays by Terence Rattigan, for some reason (we have programmes with his name in!)

I'm 17 and a student and i'm running out of things to say...
I ride a charge plug (on a fixed wheel), and although i have a fakenger bag, i also wear a helmet, an important distinction me thinks.
My favourite thing to do on my bike is ride around london at night and grace the occasional critical mass
