when I had the Raleigh twenty powder coated it came back with the bottom bracket looking like yours , any bike shop should be able to run the tap through it to clear it, I had a bit more of a problem ,being a Raleigh, the twentys bottom bracket thread was 26 TPI,as opposed to 24TPI, i tried 7 bike shops before I found one that still had an old 26tpi tap, and he couldn't remember when he last used it. ten mins with the tap and it was clear.

As usual, I just improvised and: result!

Turns out all you need is a tartar problem and some bloody minded perseverance:

It's worked a treat on the drive side, just the other side to do and the new BB can be installed.

I have to admit I was starting to get so annoyed I was ready to fire off a quite strongly worded e-mail to the powder coaters. Fortunately my innate Britishness won the day and I accepted the fact that they'd probably done their best and there's no point making a scene. Stiff upper lip and all that.

Time for a quick snifter to reduce the blood pressure before fitting the BB.

It's starting to look a bit black over Bill's mother's so myself and The Beast have repaired indoors. Kitchen this time so less chance of the mouse being found out by the cat.

You can see how it's stripped the threads on the original BB. I'm glad I didn't just go in like a bull at a gate as is my wont.

So there we have it:

One successfully installed BB. No bother!

It screwed in very smoothly so, fingers crossed, the threads should be fine.

Right, time for the chainset. What could possibly go wrong?

A very straightforward fit, essentially just tightening a couple of nuts.

I did invest in an adjustable torque wrench to get the proper tension but then managed to buy the wrong sized sockets so my normal guestimation had to come into play. I decided to tighten until I started to feel muscles ripping (probably about 5 Nm in my case).

Ciggy break then derailleurs (I can see an all-nighter coming on).

Just spent five minutes looking for my Allen keys. They were on the bike stand's tool tray. Which pratt put them there?

Another straightforward job. 5mm Allen key, although I can imagine it's very easy to cross thread it.

Right, now for the second on my list of dreaded jobs: fitting the front derailleur.

I think today's no cigar rule is about to go out of the window.

It seems to be going quite well but I could finish the build, set off on a ride and face plant tarmac due to poor workmanship. I suppose the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Whilst on my cigar break, I just wanted to thank everyone who's following this thread.

I'm sure, if left to my own devices, procrastination would be the winner. I have to admit, I could quite easily have sat on my lazy backside this afternoon and watched the three minutes of cricket highlights. The fact that I know you good people are waiting for updates helps me to get said lazy backside into gear.

It's been enjoyable so far but I can now understand why Halford's staff always look so miserable. And I have the benefit of alcohol.
