Touchscreens, to be rationalised, with no 'safety related feature' access being allowed via them

Whats interesting is our 7 year old car fulfils all these criteria but yet still has a touchscreen that works very well as 2nd display for when I need to do work from the car.

Also, a pox on lane departure and collision avoidance systems that don't work reliably and can't be disabled. I know people who have rejected new cars because of these. A collision warning just because you're going over a narrow bridge*, knowing the car might slam on the brakes at any time, is terrifying. And lane departure doesn't work on much-repaired UK roads with faded markings.

I hate that sort of thing on several levels:

Firstly, I don't like searching in menus. It's OK for stuff you do when you're not concentrating on something else, like programming the video, but otherwise it distracts your train of thought.

Secondly, I want buttons that I can feel before I press, not buttons that I've pressed before I can feel them.

There's also a parallax problem: the screen you're seeing isn't in the same plane as the surface you're pressing, so it can be difficult to see which button you're pressing if you're viewpoint is not square to the screen.

I wish programmers had the sense to disable the touchscreen for enough time to react after the screen changes, so if your finger touches the screen just at the instant it changes you don't end up pressing the 'wrong' button.

Lastly, screen sensitivities seem to vary from one extreme to another, some reacting before you're aware of touching them and others where you have to act like you're stubbing out a fag on them, screwing your finger into the screen.

You have to retune every few hundred yards driving round he Lake District.

These days it's not the programmers who do this. Its the business people. They want the feature.

I also highly dislike the touch screen but to mitigate it, I just talk to the car. Most cars have rubbish voice commands though.

They're used because it's cheaper, and in the case of menus, more amenable to miniaturisation. Fine if they're your priorities, but personally I want something that can be used without distracting you from whatever you're doing, and is reliable.

I’m three weeks into a new Cupra Born with a huge touchscreen, the basic controls for heating, volume and heated seats are at the bottom of the screen and already I’ve found it pretty intuitive, even Mrs Gunk who’s not at all techy finds it straightforward. One you’ve set the temperature and radio station there’s no need to fiddle with it on the move, all the essential information is provided on a head up display.

Do they still use the same buttons for front and rear electric windows?

Regular VAG fare but only two switches and an additional third button to activate the rear, a bit irritating, I can’t quite understand why the driver doesn’t have four buttons as in our old Mk7 Golf.
