Everybody will be offended at something

I'm not offended by it, although others may be - if they are, then it's up to them to say so.

I just find that kind of thing tiresome, dated, sad and just a little bit ignorant. But that seems to be the way things are going these days.

I don't believe anything should be off topic with humour. It is often a vehical to oust intollerant views and the words used are often the polar opposite to the view seemingly held by them on face value.

Some people are predisposed to being offended, either for themself or more likely on behalf of others ....how patronising is that?

Lighten up and laugh, I did.

Like I said in the post immediately above yours - I'm not offended. I can't really make it any clearer than that. This kind of stuff just disappoints me. I just won't be joining in the tacit chorus of thinly-veiled bigotry you seem to be suggesting. Sorry about that. You carry on though.

I'm sorry but are you suggesting I am a bigot, or that I support bigotry? If you are not offended then that is good as there is nothing to be offended by, or dissapointed by really. You clearly feel the need to pass comment (judgement) for some reason. May I ask what subjects can be used as a source of humour? Which comedians do you admire the work of? Good intelligent humour is there to provoke thought. The absurd and ironic too. I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of the emotional responses to this sort of thing, I work on instincts and there is no malace in that article whatsoever.

I suppose it all depends if you see people like Jim Davidson, Chubby Brown and Bernard Manning as 'comedians' or not. Let's not confuse the link with 'good, intelligent, thought-provoking humour' - I can only assume you haven't clicked it.

Davidson and manning are most definitly abhorrent characters. Much as the mechanics of the humour is sound the attitude behind it is seemingly personaly held. This means I am no fan of theirs at all. They are using the vehical to convey their message and will attract the following they crave. As I say, no topic should be off limits but the way in which it is dealt with will inform the way you interact or not with it depending on your own views.

I have clicked it and it is not attacking anyone. Just a situational absurdity.

Time to pop the top on another Old Peculer.

I actually found the article amusing, it's not the first (or last) time I've had comments made just because I wear lycra. The reason I posted was to let forum members see what some of the non cycling public think of cyclists. The post was not intended to upset anyone or cause any homophobic remarks. It was intended as a bit of tongue in cheek humour.

Jeez - the article is blatantly not homophobic or promoting homophobia. It's a satire on local "examiner" newspapers and a shot at the kind of bigotry and smallmindedness that some towns still have set as default. I can't believe anyone wouldn't grasp this.

The difference is that the Bernard Mannings of this world are bigots and align themselves with an audience of bigots and that is how they would get their laughs. In other words their comedy is not ironic and they are not portraying a persona or wearing a mask. By contrast I might give the example of the Alf Garnett character played by Warren Mitchell.

A great many people completely fail to realise that Alf Garnett's character is a satire and an expose of the bigotry which he espouses (and such people in the real world), rather than a bunch of offensive jokes aligned to an audience of bigots and aimed at tormenting minorities. These same people would view the linked article as in some way aimed at either cyclists or gay people, and moan about it promoting and inciting institutionalised bigotry - whereas it is obviously nothing of the sort and in fact is the opposite.

In this respect I would say it's fairly clever as a piece of comedy, although I didn't actually find it especially funny - that is more likely down to the writing and the comic timing rather than the humour of the idea.

As I said earlier, I'm just surprised that some people still find that kind of out-dated 'gay/lycra' stereotype nonsense funny. Even without the gay references, it's still a tired joke.
