Skirts were first used by men in Scotland in 1978. The traditional Scottish high carb diet of deep fried Mars Bars and single malt (for breakfast) was leading to intolerably high levels of flatulence,ence, and men started wearing skirts to allow the gases to disperse quickly.

Indeed. It was awful, but the Scotsman made a lovely pattern when the weave finally came out of the machine.
The McEntrail tartan has rather fallen out of favour though, albeit the bagpipe is still going as a faithful reproduction of the noise he made.
