In the early days of our gym they couldn't afford real weights. So they started out with red grapes and hoped, as members started weak, no one would notice. Eventually the gym strong man became the first to crush a grape during the annual strength completion. This is the true origin of the phrase "oh, I could crush a grape" and it marked the transition to apples, oranges and much weightier items.
The Gym was originally called The Jim, as they were invariably run by ex sailors named James. Thus, when Keith Vaz told his Missus that "I'm going up Jim", he was, strictly speaking, telling the truth.
