That reminds me of one of my university interviews in 1974...

I went for an interview at Kent university and was asked to describe what would happen if a fridge door was opened in a sealed room. That threw me for a few seconds but then I got into it. I had an interesting discussion with the interviewer about thermodynamics, how fridges worked, energy transfers, insulation, and so on. It all went so well that I received a letter the following day offering me a place if I achieved even two grade Ds at A-level.

The interviewer told me that the average A-level student choked on that question because it required them to actually think for themselves rather than just churn out information they'd memorised for exams.

It's 38C in my garage, and I'm doing some work inside the car (outside the garage) I've not measured the temp in the car but it must be in the 40's - after 5 minutes in there I'm soaked!

You've just reminded me that I meant to report a long-term leak to Yorkshire Water. (A friend suggested that it might be due to a stream that changed course up the hillside somewhere, but I don't think so - the flow seems completely unrelated to rainfall.) Pause... Okay - now reported!

I got a reply which said that YW already knew about the leak and planned to fix it. I just wonder how long this planning phase will last, given that water has been flowing down that road for months...

Thanks - after a year of wondering where the b*stards had hidden the plug I finally twigged this was what the wall isolator switch is for... However I still managed to turn it back on again by accident (I think catching it with one of the drawers removed) and it took me a while to realise why the top element was remaining frosty..

About five litres of ice came out of it, the melting of which should, from my fag-packet calcs have consumed enough thermal energy from the air to drop the temperature in the flat by 14 degrees... needless to say this didn't happen (I was never very good at thermo) although I do have a fully-functioning freezer again

I was somewhat gogsmacked and confused today at work, at the mentality of some people.
It was another hot day and I popped into one of the offices to drop some paperwork off.They had the air-conditioning going at full pelt and it felt like a blooming fridge in there.
I couldn't believe that they also had all the windows wide open.
I commented about the waste of energy and the pointless act of having the air conditioning on with the windows wide open.
One of the girls in there answered me back saying "that's how they like it"
I just walked out shaking my head in disbelief

they sent me a text the other day telling me to take shorter showers, and dont wash the car...there are several mains leaks I pass regularly in my travels, one of them has been there for so long Ive begun to wonder if its not actually just a new spring thats popped up as can you leave a leak for at least 10 years and not do anything about it !?! but they dont seem fussed to fix them.
