The first commercial shown on TV in Britain
was for Gibbs S R Toothpaste and was transmitted at 8.12 pm on Sept 22 1955 during a variety show hosted by Jack Jackson.
Viewers saw a tube of toothpaste embedded in a block of ice and a woman called Meg Smith brushing her teeth in the approved manner, "up and down and round the gums". The immaculate tones of Alex Macintosh delivered the newly-minted slogan: "It's tingling fresh. It's fresh as ice. It's Gibbs SR toothpaste."
The commercial owed its prime placing to chance. The Gibbs advertisement had come first in a lottery drawn with 23 other advertisements, including those for Guinness, Surf, National Benzole, Brown & Polson Custard and Summer County Margarine.

Prince Edward is the first son of a reigning monarch to be granted the lower title an Earl instead of a Duke since Tudor times.
This is because he has been promised the Duke of Edinburgh title upon the death of his father!

Really? I didn't know that, but he has taken over the DoE award.

Joseph Palmer was an extremely eccentric US farmer. His eccentricity was facial hair. United States was at that moment so beard-less that his abundant facial hair caused the mob to attack him and try to shave him circa 1830. He managed to fight off a attackers and was subsequently thrown into jail. He spent in there nearly 15 months and after release was involved with abolition of slavery and prison reform.
By the time of his death in 1873 US has become such a "beardy" country that all of its presidents from 1860 to 1897 wore a beard.
The epitaph on his grave states:
"Persecuted for Wearing the Beard"

An English King is buried in a council cemetery.
Edward the Martyr, done away with in 978, possibly at the site of what is now Corfe Castle.
He's in Brookwood Cemetery, now owned by Woking Council.
He got around a bit in his later/decreased years - this is his third resting place, or fourth if you count a few years in a cutlery box at the Midland Bank Woking.

16000 Germans were executed by guillotine for opposing the Nazi regime.
Hitler hated Jehovah's Witnesses for their refusal to help in his war effort.
Some 10,000 were incarcerated in various camps with up to 2000 dying.
They were given their own purple triangle to differentiate them from Jews and Gypsies.

Germany was executing people by axe until 1935 (possibly 1938). The executioners wore evening suits complete with top hats.
