Flip Flops can always be identified by the thongy thing between the big and second toe. If it doesn't have this it can't be a flip flop and therefore must be a sandal (I won't even lower myself to consider a "flandal" which sounds like an Austrian dessert you might see on GBBO)
Confusingly, sandals can either have or not have the thongy thing. But one thing's for sure, flip flops must have them. End of.
