My local recycling centre uses a bike silhouette on the scrap metal skip to show what can go in it. Something that I find a little depressing.

do wear goggles !!
- shorts is OK unless you use the wire brushy things which sling wires out which you have to pick out of your flesh ! Annoying rather than dangerous.
Don't angle grind near glass windows or painted items as the grit / sparks will scratch them badly. Nor near piles of inflamable stuff like oily rags or paper. Indoors perhaps isn't wholly wise either.
But honestly, you want one, even if you think you don't.
