Hi

Im selling a bike and have had some interest from someone up north.

Would paypal be the right way to get the funds before shipping or are there pitfalls?
Im not using EBay.

Seems genuine but obviously i need to be cautious of scams.
Thanks all

Bank transfer is my preferred way of taking payment, I do not release until I see the money is in there.

There can be one very major pitfall with PayPal - they routinely take the word of the buyer! If the buyer says that they didn't receive the goods, PayPal refunds them (even if signed for!). If they say the goods were not as advertised - refund usually given. EXAMPLE.

moneygram (most post offices do this) .... we often send my eldest son money .... he lives in South Africa .... within 5 minutes of sending the money, he can get the cash over the counter in South Africa. Safe and instant (he has to take photo id with him to release the funds)

As a buyer, I want to use Paypal, for my protection. As a seller, I want either cash, or a bank transfer, again for my protection.

If it's a collection item then strictly cash only.

You've got no comeback as a buyer with BACS though, excellent for a seller!.

All hinges on trust and if they are prepared to BACS the money..

Do most people pay by BACS for things sold via this forum too? Is so I assume it has to be a trust-based transaction and the mods wouldn't get involved with any dispute? Not that such a thing would be likely I suppose, what with us all being such a spiffing community of chaps and chapesses.

I wouldn't feel happy dealing with someone who had just signed up, but the people who have sold me bike parts have all been 'members of good standing'. If I don't remember who they are, I search through some of their posts and remind myself.

No problems so far. I have used PayPal and BACS.

As a buyer I'm very nervous about bank transfers. What happens if the stuff never turns up? Or never existed in the first place? If you are buying a second hand tyre for £1.99 it probably doesn't matter but what about a second hand bike for £1,999.00? I'd have absolutely no comeback at all. Not that Paypal is all that great either by all accounts.

The only answer appears to be to buy locally and use good old cash on collection.
