Well I have no knowledge at all, but must be flat bar, a nice bright colour (absolutely and under no circumstances black/grey/silver/brown), not Specialized, brakes...and able to get my not insignificant girth up inclines (not hills), maybe steel with a carbon fork...under £300

Does such a thing exist...I've not bought a bike this year and getting antsy

I guess something like http://www.fixedgearfrenzy.com/blue-white-single-speed-fixed-gear-bike.html

or better http://www.fixedgearfrenzy.com/no-logo-alloy-green-white-single-speed-fixed-gear-bike-53cm.html

I will be riding in London...need to be able to stop...not least because of all the other loons on single speed bikes!

Strange to see a fixed speed with Brake callipers
Press the brake at speed and it will be buckaroo time ... I would of thought ...
Looks the part thought ..
Its a single speed/fixie (flip flop hub)
Strangely enough my stalled project bike will be a 3 speed (S/A) but with a single speed rear wheel as an option (I've got a spare wheel with a screw on type hub in the shed and it only takes a couple of minutes to remove the S/A hub wheel with the cable and shifter still attached)

Go for it.

I'm lucky in that the ones that have tempted me (so far) have always sold fairly quickly. But there will come a day when the bike shop has one in the second hand rack at the same time I have the money in my pocket...

I always relate to single speed with no free wheel ! ie fixed wheel track bike

Didn't you say the other day that you weren't buying any more bikes?

Must admit a single speed kind of appeals to me for commuting, will keep an eye on suggestions in here

Fixedgearfrenzy!!!, well you are in hipster territory now vickster. Three hundred reduced to just over two hundred, no detailed specs, the alarm bells should be ringing. Hell, these people are no better than Halfords, sorry these people are a lot worse than Halfords. They are probably also selling time shares in Spain. If you want one buy a proper one like the Charge Plug or whatever . You are always saying how much disposable income you have so why buy cheap? I know people say how uncomplicated and simple they are compared with geared bikes but how many would convert their car to a three speed non synchro box?

Brakes on fixed work fine, you just use them to help your legs slow the bike. Useful in the hilly terrain round here. My fixed/SS (flip flop) has front and rear brakes: -
