I remember watching the jointers do that as an apprentice, work of art!. But I thought they could put plastic pipes inside the lead these days.

water isn't my speciality but its a big brass compression fitting with rubber seals instead of a copper olive . PITA is you need to know thickness of pipe as well as OD to get the right one, so planning works is a mare . unless you can wipe lead

or if you are a very good cable jointer and can "wipe lead " you can repair it with a bit of copper shoved up inside and then sealed properly.

not that i have ever done that on a job where an apprentice nailed a water pipe. oh no
Not supposed to use wiped joints nowadays, that's why " leadloc" fittings were invented, it's a compression fitting that allows you to either repair the lead pipe or convert the lead to copper or plastic. As leaded solder has been outlawed, the lead free solder has a higher melting point than lead so wiped joints aren't possible( the lead pipe would just melt before the solder is applied).

well it hasn't been outlawed as some of the older PILC cables can still only be jointed by "wiping the lead" so if you know where to get lead solder ...
British Gas used to specify leaded solder for the heating and gas joint as it was cheaper than lead free and they believed the installers wouldn't nick it for private jobs as lots did potable water and we know lead shouldn't be used on them .

and cheers for reminding me of the word " leadloc" have used loads in my past as general housing maintenance ( easier to train a spark to do plumbing than the other way round apparently )and had a mind fart trying to remember the name

My plumber reckons it's nothing to worry about.

My mate thinks it's poisoning me and will destroy my house - he also thinks it's a doddle for Thames water to replace.
