Coombe Gibbet is 'nice', and is right in the middle of a regular 50+ mile ride for me. What are the other hills nearby that maybe I'm unaware of?

When you get to the top, turn left, after an initial bit more of up hill, it descends, take the sharp right, which goes up but not quite as steep as Coombe, you can then descend back down and join the road back to Hurstbourne.

I've never taken the right turn at the bottom. Always gone round to the left and back home via Kintbury. However, the right turn leading back via Hurstbourne Tarrant, Burghclere, Kingsclere sounds like an interesting variation.

Chaingang results - Oct/Nov 2015 series

1. Bill S
2. RickB + 08:25
3. JonBon + 11:12

Bill comes through as champ with a comfortable margin of over 8 mins from his nearest competitor. These flattish courses with the odd hill are right up his street by the looks of it so its going to be hard to dethrone him anytime soon! Well done man! :notworthy:

Congratulations to the 10 who completed all 5 stages. You're commitment is appreciated and hopefully that number will grow with December league - to be released shortly!

Gonna give special mention to Whorty, Rob, Paul, Baldo and especially Goldwolfie for their great effort on the finale. Not many guys would have the determination to keep going that long. I know you'll reap the benefits in your fitness due to your dedication. :bravo:

I haven't had a go at the mountain moose/goats climbs yet because my scheduled sessions aren't showing up! But once I can fix that I'll be doing them as much as possible!

I don't know when the league starts again? I'm guessing next year but I'm gonna try and participate in all of them next time.

I'll see you in a bit, heading to the garage now!

I'm pretty sure you are not in the weight category the mountain moose group is aimed at!:whistle:;)

There are lot's of issues that we all fell foul of when starting with bkool, many of which are scattered among the 600+ pages of this thread. I wish I had the time to dig through and gather then for a sticky! Perhaps we can start a list by quoting and adding to here ... I've started a new thread to keep it separate! :-)

Thanks for organising it @RickB , it was good fun. Well done to all.

I've never been part of a cycling club, only ever commuted to work and back in my London days, but this set up does feel (to me anyway) like I'm part of a club. Some great people, lots of encouragement, and helps to keep the focus to get better. Not sure I'll ever be a goat, but I'm willing to sweat until I melt trying!! :heat:

No doubt a few pounds heavier too, Monte  Christmas could be tight for the Thursday night rides for most of us I'd say. :snowball:

Thanks all for the support - Geoff and Bill are the original and best admins of course - I'm just a newbie at all this!

Great way to look at it - pointless getting to worked up about as we have no way of truly knowing - I really enjoy the competitiveness of Thursday nights chain gang and just want to get fitter and drop a few pounds.
Agreed. And being the sole member riding a kickr right now (AFAICT) segregating the groups seems like a step in the wrong direction to me. Of course I realistically can't join the chain gang rides live due to scheduling issues, but it's good to know that if the option presents itself, I can jump on my trusty steed and start spinning with the group.

I really like Whorty's idea of normalizing weight. A ride with everyone together in a group sounds like it'd be a hell of a lot of fun. I'll try hard to juggle things so I can join that ride live when it happens.

Here's an interesting one, I went on my trainer today and tried a climb I did earlier in the year in the Pyrenees, the col de la Pierre Saint Martin from Arette over 24km up hill just under 26km in total, you climb over 1400m, it was very hot when I was there and I had never attempted anything similar so took it slow and steady bottom 9-10km at the foot of the mountain average around 9-10%
It took me 2hrs 17mins on the trainer and in real life 2hrs 15mins, bearing in mind I have an injury at present and didn't get on a bike for 6 weeks, though I have done a lot of climbing since the attempt in real life before being injured, the times are remarkably close, I was being very cautious in real life as I was on my own and it was an unknown quantity.

I would say it was easier in real life, I am not sure if that is because of the injury and not being able to get out of the sadle on the trainer which I did in real life, the fact you have scenery to look at ( the ride in Bkool is 2D ) or because I didn't get to get off at the top and take photos and admire the view into Spain. It was an interesting experiment. Very hard going though and a little less rewarding.

Just wondering...

Having managed to get from Amateur 6 to Amateur 8, do you drop back down again if you don't maintain a certain level of effort?

I am not sure but the climb I mention above I only averaged 130watts which is way lower than my 190+ I did last time to go up to Amateur 7 it hasn't dropped mine yet

If you go something like 6-8 weeks without an effort in right power zone, then it'll drop you back. Sadly, like so many things I don't think the exact criteria are documented anywhere.
