Rick, I missed the 3rd chain gang. Is it too late to do it now for the league?
Fraid so Bob. There's no way for me to add a ride once it's closed down.

I have to say that BKOOL is starting to frustrate me, especially since the latest BSIM software update.

Decided to do the Col du Glandon yesterday. Eventually gave up. Not because I found it too much but because the results were so ridiculously off the mark as to make them useless. Resistance was up & down, regularly returning 0W at 10%, or 1000W+ at 91kmh at 9%+. The whole ride was a joke, and not a very funny one!

Err, Geoff,
I have just had a closer look at this and realise I am starting with Bill:ohmy: Surely some mistake :stop:. He will be over his cold as well...

There is a real opportunity here to see how well drafting works. I can see some riders coming together and using this to keep the chasers at bay. Should be very exciting :wahhey:

It's your own fault for finishing only 4 seconds behind him in the original stage...

And he did have two attempts.

I think drafting would be a really good idea, as you know the guys "behind" you will be closing in on you.

Yeah, Bill "two attempts" S

Actually Bill, if I have the legs for this we need to try and work together to keep AAAC and LB at bay for as long as possible and who then knows what will happen?

I have to confess that this course is ideal for catching those down up power spikes I have demonstrated in a small 2km session where I was able to peak at over 1000 watts at the begining of a climb without pedaling.
If I take my power into the climb from a descent I can actually crest small climbs at unusually high power peaks before BSim actually catches up with the resistance which is probably a bit similar to the on/off technique.

I think that is the reason some of the speeds on the undulating section after the big climb varied so much, and why Bill, who seems a master at the art of extending the inertia into a gradient change, could maintain 30mph+ up some of the 5%+ inclines.

I guess we are all looking for the simulation to closely match what we can achieve in the real world, but if it's taken as entertainment during training then the fun factor is just as important.

I think Bkool would be best to evolve the simulation algorithms very carefully, and test them against a wide range of real world rides before they release them. It wouldn't be too hard to feed records of real world rides into the simulation algorithm and observe how closely they match, then tune the algorithm to avoid too wide a divergence.

Absolutely right there Bob. You me and JonBon need to work together to try and keep the chasers at bay and to try and catch those in front. When I saw your initial "complaint" about being slotted in with me I was going to suggest we work together. I think we have a potential advantage if our riding styles are similar enough to make good drafting, but I fear the terrain on this one may put a stop to this. As Geoff says, I always try to use my momentum to help on the incline changes and I seem to have gotten reasonably good at it. I'm guessing you are too though Bob, and Jonbon seems to do it by making good steady power. We will see, but it should be a lot of fun, and I think we'll all put that little bit of extra effort into this one:smile:.

I had a similar thought when I sawnmy start time was the same as Rick's as he usually finishes minutes ahead of me - then I realised I had finished within a few seconds of him on this particular stage (all irrelevant I know because sadly Rick can't make the ride). So I was thinking to myself, what's preferable - a stage where you did unusually well and therefore having a big handicap and some very quick company, or a smaller handicap but on a stage you were a bit rubbish at?!

Really looking forward to this one however it pans out!

OK, if we go for a rerun of Stage one of this months chaingang (Kipsters Kalamity) I have 37 recorded finishers.

If anyone else wants to take part, can they let us know a competitive time for the stage, or failing that their fitness level and who they usually finish close to.

Applying a handicap of between 80% and 90% of their time ahead of the last place I get the following start times in minutes after the start.

  • 0.0 GailB

How's that look?

Edited for clarity and to group same start times together!

There's a couple of groups setting off at the same time so good potential for working together in a mini peleton if you can get it to work. Not liking the look of that group of four setting off together at 20 minutes and that's going to be bearing down on me though! :headshake:

I like it. I will practise my technique in preparation:okay:

To motivate the handicap chase riders further, and because I can't stop fiddling with Excel spreadsheets, I have added the improvement needed to win the race, presuming no-one else else hits their required improvement.

Don't forget, if you don't have a start time and would like to take place, just shout out and we'll work out a handicap.

There seems to be enough interest to make a Saturday 5pm re-run viable, in which case we can adjust the handicaps after the first run to make the re-run even closer!

My recommendation for those starting early, if any of the faster riders catch and pass you, tuck in and draft for as long as you possibly can! That should improve your time and make it harder for the next rider to catch you.
Done enough times, you could approach the finish line tucked in behind all the fast boys and ready to sprint for the win! :hyper:

I remember from last winter, catching Monte and then finding it real hard to pull away, as he just upped his game and got back on my tail every time I tried to break away! :B)
