I've been following this with interest. Nice to see it's got a proper chassis and beam axles. I bet JLR are really, really pissed off that Ratcliffe is going to steal their lunch, but they've only got themselves to blame for the situation. All they've done for the last 20 years is push more and more expensive and bloated luxury stuff and just ignore their traditional customer base that they built their reputation off the back of. I certainly wouldn't be buying the new "Defender", especially not at £40k. I wonder if they're planning to do a short wheelbase version, which would be less unwieldy in tight spaces and have a better turning circle?

So Land Rover have twigged that their all new Defender/Discovery/SUV thing is actually a total turkey, and that the Ineos Grenadier is the Defender they should have built.
They are now, for the first time in living memory running a TV ad campaign for the vehicle that made them, they have also placed one in the upcoming James Bond film No time to die, I think it's too late, Land Rover have allowed it to die a death of a million public criticisms, everyone involved in this project deserves to be birched in public.
I bet Mr Wilks is spinning in his grave.

Saw my first “new” Defender on the road yesterday, it is truly awful, I can’t see many MOD orders flooding in for it.

I've seen just one out in the flesh so to speak, it just looks like it should have had the Discovery brand, not Defender given to it, the first design criteria of this brand is, it's a working utility vehicle, it should be the best off road it can be, should be available as a pick up, van or station wagon, and should be capable of being converted to perform specialist tasks, it's not an SUV for dropping the little darlings off at school.

As it (Defender) has been seemingly removed from front-line duties ('soft-skinned') probably no, there'll not be orders
EMP protection could be another reason (why they didn't like the Td5)
At one point the MOD we’re refurbishing the older non turbo diesels to the Wolf spec with a 300 Tdi engine, the hope was to get the same service life again from an existing asset, for less than the cost of a brand new vehicle, perhaps some one high up foresaw the turkey that was to become the Defender.

Typical rubbish BBC inaccurate report, with a slight hint of the truth in it.

:eek::wacko:

Probably with very high EMP protection?
(if the same thoughts still apply?)
I presume they will be considering protection, but it was my first thought too. If they think it's possible to protect a wholly electric vehicle, I doubt they would worry much about the electrics of an everyday one like the Defender. Half the Army fleet is bristling with electronics compared to the 'old' Defender already.

Hot off the press - the Grenadier is going to be built at the Hambach factory in France which is just winding down Smart ForTwo production.

A very disappointing piece of news, but from a business perspective quite understandable. A fully equipped factory with an already skilled workforce if wuicker and cheaper than starting from scratch, and such opportunities are rare.

What about the soon to be closed down Nissan factory in Newcastle or a soon to be closed down Toyota factory in Derby

Nissan won't close because theyd be contractually obliged to pay back the hundreds of millions theyve had in government bribes subsidies over the years.

Toyota, on the other hand... but then where would Toyota go? No one else is going to subsidise them to start afresh elsewhere. Until such things actually happen I don't believe it.
