What about freshly made mushy peas, made using frozen peas?
Bit poncey.

We have a Friday one here too. Announces his presence with a hand bell and updates on the village FB page. Not a one man band, they have several vans and cover a wide area. Only used it once, passable haddock and loadsa chips.

Think there's another one on Saturdays too.

Two Brothers? I remember when that was widely regarded as one of the best fish & chips in London - 20 years ago!

The only 'award winning' fish and chip shop I can recall was in Lisson Grove, Paddington-ish.

It got quite a lot of media coverage in the 1980s.

Me and a mate joined the herd once, but there was a queue outside so we went back to the pub.

Talking of which are most chippies still using lard rather than oil ?

Short answer is no, although some make a feature of it.

There's a shop in a former pit village in County Durham which still uses a coal-fired fryer.

Only been there once, but you can almost taste and certainly smell the coal when eating the chips.

Went to a Harry Ramsden's once, not at all impressed and expensive too.
Might well have change since then though.
The 'elitist' one in London is 'The Seashell' at the bottom of Lisson Grove near Marylebone station. Again pricey but very good.

From memory it's around 6quid for jumbo haddock and chips in the local chippy at my parents (Grimsby). That may or not include have fishcake and peas, I can't remember. I live down south and don't bother with fish n chips here - unless you know somewhere with a rep it's not worth the hassle of being dissapointed.

Toff's in Muswell Hill are great....but with the trimmings you won't get much change out of 15quid.

Overpriced imo when I went, high price due to where it is and what the locals will pay

Seine Rigger in Banstead is very good. £7-8 for fish and chips or thereabouts

When I was a student in Leeds, a bus trip to the original Harry Ramsden's in Guiseley (followed by a few beers at the pub across the road) was a regular outing for me and my housemates. It was great. Unfortunately, it then became a chain and now the only connection it has with the original Harry Ramsden is the name.

I think I'm barred from Renuccis after arguing about their ridiculous "ticket" system.
All I wanted was a portion of chips and I had to wait until they'd cooked three lots of fish and chips for somebody else before they'd even consider putting my chips in the frier.
I think it's about £7 at Silloth for fish and chips, but that feeds two of us, so it's a better deal than Macdonalds which may be cheaper but you're hungry again five minutes later.
I usually ring them up and order, then go down and pick them up.....you get more chip's that way as they get bored waiting for you and just keep going!
Have you tried the shop on Shady grove?Same owners, different staff apparently, they might not recognise you, mind you, given where it is,they may have bouncers

In Silloth do you mean the one on the corner of the street that goes down to the RNLI station?
Man of taste!!That little shop must be known to generations all over the North. As a child,Trespadernes was for chip's,and Longcakes for ice cream,Ah the memories!
There is now a new cafe in the former bank, celebrating Kathleen Ferrier who, whilst married to the manager, was for a time a resident of Silloth.
