Air bags are activated by the seat belts or if something hit a parked car they would deploy.

That is one of the issues of today's cars, they are too safe, somebody suggested removing the airbags & having a spike, that would slow people down.

shoot load of bruising etc aswell but not enough for my liking

Google the drunk mum that flipped her Qashqai - there is a you tube somewhere - I only knew it was a squashy, because I saw the underside plastic panels, then saw the car. Everyone got out fine. The driver was piddled, and hit a roundabout at full speed, the car launched and flipped over.
