If you leave the toast for a moment, in the toaster, or propped up on the worktop, to let the steam out and let it cool slightly, you'll get less soggy toast when you use spread. I use spread - whichever brand is on offer. It makes butter a real treat when I do get it!

Leaving it in the toaster dries it out and the tensile strength of dry toast isn't enough to resist the torsional forces applied by a butter-laden knife, so it breaks up. I suppose you might get away with it if you use marge.... tsk!

However, letting it cool in a toastrack means that the butter doesn't melt into the toast, and the marmalade sits on top. That way you get to taste all three in a mouthful, rather than an oily buttery mush. Think hotel breakfasts.

Absolutely - there's nothing more delicious than a thick layer of good quality butter on cold toast with thick-cut marmalde, washed down with a mug of tea.

Recently I've been having peanut butter and banana on toast,
My regular toasted nutrition of choice!!:wahhey:

I agree, there's a perfect toast temperature for butter, I use 2 slices of toast in a tent formation to cool as we're not old enough to own a toast rack.

Oh, and the following combinations work far better than expected:
Marmite and raspberry jam
Marmalade and mature cheddar
Marmite and peanut butter.

Not a spreading item, but mashed sardines with a dash of vinegar and a twist of black pepper. Needs to go back under the grill to get the sardines hot.

I was just sitting here eating my tuna melt panini, when I saw this thread, and I started thinking that tuna & cheese would be pretty good on top of toast and then stuck under the grill.

Must try that out some time. :mrpig:
