Today's Easter Special chez Casa Reynard was as follows:

Porchetta-style turkey breast*, roasties and red cabbage braised with apple & ginger, followed by a marmalade & sultana baked cheesecake. :mrpig:

The turkey was from the YS birds I picked up on Christmas Eve, the potatoes some of the last survivors of the New Year's Eve YS haul where I bagged the equivalent of a whole sack (25kg) for £2.30, and the red cabbage was also from the 15p Christmas veg, but that I'd braised and stashed in the freezer. The apples for the cabbage were from the community orchard, the cream cheese for the cheesecake was also acquired on yellow sticker, while the oranges to make the marmalade were bought on a clubcard offer.

* Porchetta is usually pork, which is butterflied out, and spread with a herb paste made with parsley, rosemary, oregano, crushed fennel seed, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil and salt & pepper. The meat is then rolled back up again and tied before being roasted. This works brilliantly with turkey breast as well - 40 mins per kilo plus an additional 20 mins at 170C fan, plus 10 mins resting time.

Today I cooked...bogger all.
Kids had a party to go to some distance away, late up so we just had a cornish pasty, a nice one but....
Party food, pizza, all the usual tidbits that aren't very healthy.
Home at 5, a bit too late to cook and kidsnwere hungry so a quick McDonalds.

And now, I feel stodgy, over full, bloated, horrible.

Bring on the proper cooking tomorrow....

Would it be presumptious of me to suggest you eat too much? Asking for a friend.

I didn’t, but the wife cooked trout risotto, blooming lovely. A friends son in law provided it. My younger brother used to give us plenty, but he sadly passed away in 1999.

We live 150 yds from a small chalk river, we see fishermen (never seen a woman) walking in their garb, but despite asking I’ve never managed to be given/sold one.

Reminds me of how long it is since we had kedgeree...hmm, I might get some ingredients.

The law regarding recreational anglers keeping and selling their catch is complex, so most keep it simple by keeping the allowance of two for themselves and releasing any over that.

Mushroom, broccoli and blue cheese pasta.

Using a punnet of slightly tired chestnut mushrooms, one head of 15p broccoli that I bought the other day, the last dollops of soured and double cream respectively, some of the dripping from Sunday's turkey, and Cornish Blue cheese picked up recently on YS in Waitrose.

Very tasty, and still enough left for another meal if I add a few extra bits on the side.

Another cheap, easy and relatively nourishing meal...
Yellow stickered pork loin chops, £2.18 for four, air fried.
Broccoli, frozen, maybe £1 worth
Tin of sweetcorn, say £1
Small roast potatoes in the airfryer..maybe 50p as we always buy a big bag of potatoes
Yorkshire puds, air fried, maybe 40p worth.

So a meal for 3 adults, 2 children for around £5. £1 a head then

Freezer raid.

Pulled pork, a portion of cauliflower curry and fajitas.

Then a fruit bowl raid to clear up any fruit that might not be great soon.

Satisfying tidy up, but a bit odd.

Nothing wrong with a plate of randoms. Similar here tonight, clearing up the leftovers in the fridge; fish, tartare sauce, broccoli & mushroom pasta, beetroot and cheesy garlic bread.
