Run out of bread. Get the bread maker on for fresh bread in the morning.

Now reclining in bed as the smell of cooking bread wafts through the house.
Just need to encourage my house mate to get the coffee on.

Today I cooked Matzos. For a Passover experience thing.
If that was what the Israelites had to eat in the desert no wonder they moaned.
Not the first time I've made them, but they are always interesting.
A lot cheaper than the supermarket item.

Another cheapish meal (I'm beginning to worry myself, am I turning into a worse tight wad than I already am  )
Small roast chicken, £2.81 I think, yellow sticker price.
White rice with some sweetcorn and diced mushrooms mixed in and a jar of sweet and sour sauce

Total cost for 5 of us...less than £6

Kids mullered it for a change, nice to keep it fairly simple and healthy (barring the sweet aand sour perhaps)

Hah! I bet you're still not as bargainiferous as me ;)

BTW, home made sweet & sour is easy. Half a stock cube made up (chicken or veg), a thinly-sliced onion, a generous squeeze of tomato ketchup or puree, a couple of rings of canned pineapple plus some of the juice (NOT in syrup), and cornflour to thicken. You can add some chilli, Chinese 5 spice, ginger, sweet pepper, bamboo shoots and spring onion if you have / want it.

You can poach / warm up your chicken in the sauce prior to thickening.

It will be WAY nicer than a jar. And a lot less sugar.

Tonight Mrs W cooked if that’s the right word a cheese fondue. I don’t think it’s possible to have too much cheese and French bread.

No big skills, no flair, made fish, chips and.mushy peas tonight.
Fish was cod, out the box from the supermarket so no biggie there but...
The chips !!!!
I always buy a 10kg bag from our local farmer (technically he no longer farms, he's in his early 80s and simply buys at market now).and usually sells Picasso ...this week he had a different variety who's name I can't remember.

THE best chips I've had in a very long time...

I simply have to find out what they were...crispy, tasty, golden, firm, everything a good chip could be

Maris Pipers generally make the best chips. Georgina (usually sold as a baking potato) also makes a reasonably decent chip.

You really do need a floury potato. Desiree (red-skinned) are also good, but they have a naughty habit of absorbing a lot of fat, so you may end up a bit wider than normal, afterwards... ;)

Shame you can't get Bintjes here in the UK...
