How does that save energy? He would have had to use more power to go the same speed

On that stage, I think if there was any gifting going on by Pog it was to del Toro. Remco just latched on and spoiled the love-in. Pog spoiled his own chances by towing Toro and Remco all the way up there. If he'd gone earlier he could have left them both easily. What he managed to do was to set Remco up perfectly. But even if though del Toro didn't get the stage, Pog still managed to maximise del Toro's gain over Seixas - so still successful.

I think that's all true ... I was trying to say that;
Although he really wanted Del Toro to win it, when Remco dropped DT (last km-ish?), it looked to me as if Pog still had the legs to win the sprint; but chose not to for PR reasons. Sure, Remco got a massive leadout/tow from Pog, but I still think on that kind of climb Pog could have outsprinted him.
