Tyres are shot but I can't afford new ones, is there anything I can do?

You said you have checked to ensure that no debris remains in the tyre. One wee trick is to get a piece of cotton wool and run it along the inside of the tyre, that way if any small piece of debris is there it will catch on it highlighting the area to you..

Great tip....will add some cotton wool balls to my first aid kit!
Shouldn't say this.......but I haven't had a puncture in years! (What are the odds on me getting a puncture tomorrow now I have no doubt jinxed myself?)

.......I didn't get a puncture! ( But I did take the precaution of changing the balding and perished tyre off the rear and replacing it with a Marathon before my ride today)
