Wahoo and Routes

This was on a desktop (windows 11, chrome or firefox browser).
If I checked the box for turn notifications when downloading, it insisted on a subscription. I'm subscribed now, otherwise I'd do a screenshot.
I just tried this (in a browser, created a RWGPS free a/c, created route, tried assorted export / synch options) and it invariably says that you need a paid subscription in order for the route to feature 'Notify before turn'. This appears to be... a little misleading since, when the route is on the head unit (Wahoo ROAM V2), it does have turn-by-turn navigation. I infer that these turn-by-turn cues are being created by the head unit; after all, it can do turn-by-turn having created a route itself, so it would be surprising if it could not import a file and add turn-by-turn instructions to it. I suspect that what you *need* a paid RWGPS subscription for is various things that RWGPS can add, such as 'custom' waypoints, points of interest, 'custom' cues. Those are undeniably useful, but not essential for turn-by-turn.

Yes - if it was JUST the turn notifications then no problem at all.
I should have been more specific with the problem I experience.

It's precisely those other features I want - the waypoints, POIs and other cues - they're not "custom" in any way, they're standard features of various route file formats, and often provide vital information about a route; eg locations for dispersed riders to regroup; clues for a treasure hunt; stops for food/drink; and even audax controls (particularly info controls which won't be obvious).

RidewithGPS have chosen a subscription model that strips out that information; it's quite an annoyance.

That is pretty annoying. Other services have done similar types of thing over the years, either removing the ability to produce custom* items at all or charging for the ability to do so (which is at least less bad). Other's make it merely awkward or hidden to define such things :-\
... the waypoints, POIs and other cues ...

* That's precisely what custom means in this context. They're not things like turn-by-turn cues which software can produce automatically, they're things that users insert to customise and improve their routes by adding information specific to an event (as distinct from that related to a line going a long a road/path and the intersections on that road/path). They're certainly features of file formats, and have been for over three decades, but they are almost invariably inserted by users, not by /automated/ software.

I can understand this but there's an alternative perspective. I've been a subscriber for 8/9 years. When I asked a friend why he subscribed he replied "because I want it to be there in the future." That hadn't occurred to me. I went home and signed up. I feel it's reasonable for subscribers to access features that are unavailable to free users. A reasonable approach to funding the business in my view.

I think there's a saying along the lines "If you're not paying for the product, then you are the product".

ie the alternative to subscription is exploitation of your data or attention (to ads).

When I used my Bolt V1 I only got TbT notifications if I had created a route in RWGPS; never if generated in Strava.

However the Bolt V2 gives me TbT regardless of the route’s genesis so I agree that the newer head units do native TbT.

Fair enough, but i now support three of these site. RobbedbyGPS is the one I would rather not have.

Just pick one you like and stick to that then?
